As a Plexpass subscriber and long time user Plex and FreeNAS, I have always loved the ability to host my Plex server from my NAS and home server. With the addition of GPU HW transcoding in the last few years I would really love to see this feature come to the FreeBSD world as well. My understanding is that this feature was not implemented on FreeBSD due to limitations of PCIE passthrough. However, it looks like these OS limitation are mostly if not completely resolved in my recent research. I would really appreciate the ability to enhance my Plex experience by having GPU (Nvidia) HW transcoding working in the near future.
the support wiki implies it does support gpu for freenas
FreeBSD-specific Notes
Compatible FreeBSD servers require Plex Media Server 1.13.9 or newer.
I have the checkbox to set it but do not know how to tell if the GPU is being leveraged or not.
No, freenas or truenas does not support GPU transcoding yet. The support article does not say that it does. Like I said in the original post, this is a limitation of support on FreeBSD as opposed to Debian Linux or Windows. Previously it was a driver support issue, but Nvidia released open source drivers last year and FreeBSD gained support for pcie pass-through about a year ago as well. Further development of this is on Plex and the makers of truenas or freenas.
