FreeNAS Hardware Transcoding Not Working

Server Version#: 1.15.5.994
Player Version#: 4.31.1
FreeNas Version#: 11.2

I have an intel 3570k which is supposed to support Intel Quick Sync, and I have “Use hardware acceleration when available” checked in my transcoder advanced settings. Does anyone know why my server isn’t using hardware transcoding?

software transcode

The Ivy Bridge QSV Support is pretty rudimentary (as for what formats are supported)

See e.g. hardware accelerated algorithms for Ivy Bridge microarchitecture in the related Wikipedia article:

I’ve encoded a file in handbrake as h264 Constrained Baseline (one of the supported formats for encode and decode from the article you listed) and uploaded it to the server. I was really hoping this would solve the issue but sadly not. Are there any drivers or software related things I am supposed to change in FreeNAS? or is it supposed to work out of the box once you check the box in transcode settings?

Thanks so much for the help!

I had missed the FreeNas part before…

Linux-specific Notes

Hardware-Accelerated Streaming on Linux requires:

  • 64-bit Ubuntu (16.04 or later) or 64-bit Fedora (26 or later) distributions. (Other distributions may be capable, but are not officially supported.)

I believe HW acceleration for PMS will only be supported in upcoming FreeBSD / FreeNAS 12.
