Grid Update

@kinoCharlino - ive only just noticed the subtle removal of the Q1 statement that was made regarding the grid update, this has been removed completely now!

What has slowed development down that you edited the post without telling anyone? its a total insult to your users as we all know what you said lol!

Unfortunately, we have had to push delivery out by one quarter due to resourcing challenges. The developer who was assigned to this had to be moved to another project.

https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/298470/grid-view-update-for-dvr-program-guide

And let’s not forget my favorite.

plans to deliver it a soon as we can (while balancing priorities with DVR stability enhancements).

Look. First quarter is not a guarantee. If the post gets updated again, get over it.
Yes. Current listing is annoying. Plex DVR is still no-where near replacing my TiVO.
Know what? It just may in a few years.

I’m always amazed that Plex is so non-transparent and wish we were given clues as to what bugs were being worked on, what features requests were even looked at (especially after some of the features that get added make many of my forum colleagues here say ‘WTH? WTF??’ Who asked for this??(, then one plan of a GOOD (in my and many others opinions) planned item actually mentioned gets pushed out and people get upset like they were guaranteed the deadline was going to be met.

I’m just more annoyed the post was edited to have the q1 section removed, when the initial one of q4 2017 wasnt going to happen the post was unpinned and a new one was made explaining things…

This time it was just changed to omit the comment, and no further explanation.

My interpretation of the post still hasn’t changed.

As has been already posted, its been deferred by one quarter, from the initial Q4 ETA, with no concrete ETA. It shouldn’t be surprising to anyone if the ETA is moved again or no new ETA is given. Unfortunate as that may be.

I strongly believe that the Plex developers need to prioritize this new proposed updated guide feature. However, as they develop Plex as a whole with these point releases, insidious bugs may arise. Bugs that may demand “all hands on deck” or something close to it.

Personally I have lost count of how many posts I’ve seen of people requesting that they stop rolling out new features and start fixing issues that have been carried over from version to version. I mean who here hasn’t seen such a post?

Hey guys, happy to provide some clarification here. The post was edited as we knew grid view was delayed past Q1, but at the time I didn’t have all the details to be able to provide a complete update. I had to kill the timing expectation until I could get something finite.

Schedules and ETAs are not something we can guarantee, as things slip for a number of reasons. Grid view got delayed due to prioritizing getting DVR scheduling and full time shifting out on more client players, along with fixing some rather critical recording stability and reliability issues. Those took priority over adding a new UI and functionality. Grid view is still very much important to get out, as we’ve clearly seen the demand for it inside and outside this forum. It’s also been something the support team has been reminding (ok pushing  ) to bump up in priority. Q1 was about stability and client parity. We’re aiming to land grid view Q2, as that quarter is dedicated to adding some new functionality to DVR to improve the user experience (along with continued resources spent on fixing issues that arise). Please keep in mind that I’m only able to provide that info as a guide. I’m with you all on the need to have this functionality to make DVR more useful and convenient.

Well said!

It’s unfortunate that Grid view has been pushed out another quarter but I’m sure those Plex users wrestling with stability issues are glad for the attention to their issues.

Crossing my fingers for a Q2 release of this much touted feature!

Most of the people I know are developers and software engineers so I know how these things go,…

@kinoCharlino,

Thanks for the update

Soooooo… Do you think they’ll update us anytime soon? I’d really like an update on this. I really like the thought of cutting the cord but I absolutely cannot get it done while it’s hard to find things. Sometimes I just want to go to a channel like NBC and watch something. I don’t always know what I want and I just want to watch TV… lol

After spending a month away from Plex and going over to Emby, purely because of the Grid TV (and working sync)…
…I totally prefer plexs current approach anyways - Dont get me wrong the grid is handy when wanting to browse a particular channel, but day to day, just searching through the movie section for films i want to record over any channel is FAR superior to the grid view…

…So in a nutshell im happy to wait til its ready

Getting closer. Unfortunately I can’t provide a release date.

Glad to see you like that approach. The plan is to offer both styles of view so the user can easily go back-and-forth based on how they want to view their channels.

It was interesting when I first got Sling (having just cut traditional cable) how much I missed a grid guide. The On Now guide is very similar to what Plex currently offers… Thumbnails of things that are actually on right now organized by category.

I joined the voices clamoring for the grid, confused by the only guide offering they had, and after some time, Sling brought their Grid View online.

I am surprised how little I actually use it, now that I have it. I find myself continuing to surf through the thumbnails, not caring what actual channel a particular show is on.

to be fair - I am a long term (since 2001/2002) linux vdr user. I never was much into the “grid” as I was more living on the search the epg function and I really enjoyed the automatic timer creation based on key words…

But - my wife is a typical tv guide/tv news paper user, and she insists on a grid to compare channels.

So, I take what Plex delivers. Happily  And, being a dev myself sometimes, i know how things can go. So please keep the things going Plex team.

I would think that the both the grid view and stability would be a far and away priority over developing new clients. All that rushing new client development over stability and ease of use does is piss off a larger group of people and as they say, youi can’t make a second first impression.

I have been using NextPVR and Schedules direct for the guide for over two years now. A grid guide. When I researched Plex it looked interesting. Have been “playing” with it for a little time and without any doubt the grid guide will be much better.
A question would be is the current guide in Plex a one day only? I can not find any way to schedule a program in a day or two ahead. Did I miss something?

There are a couple of ways and none of them are all that great. The guide is actually 2 weeks but it does not show it like that. If you know the name of the show that you want to record, you can enter the name in the search box of the guide and it will show you all of the instances of that show that the guide contains. Another way at times is to look in the “recommended for you” section but not all of the shows are there and there is no way to go back to where you were if you click on a show. The back button will reload the selection from the beginning and there is no specific order to it, IOW, the shows reload in random order. If its a movie you want to see, the upcoming movies guide does show all of the movies in the 2 week guide but once again, the back button does a random order reload of the movies.

OK, I will check that out. Thanks for the information.
No wonder most want a grid like I have been using.

The problem that I have is if sometimes the search doesn’t work! Which happens in software like this from time to time. I can just go directly to the channel/time and hit Record if it doesn’t find it through search.

Honestly, that’s the ONLY reason I want the grid. I’m not a channel surfer. I don’t spend a lot of time watching TV. It would be quite nice to just put on CW33 at night when I’m working and just have it in the background without having to search for which show is on CW33 right now… if you catch my drift, but other than that, I just like to record a few shows and be done with it.

We are fast approaching the middle of May which is the quasi equinox of Q2. We will be on to Q3 in short order.

I really hope the Plex dev team can pull off the guide grid update soon as was initially “tentatively” suggested.
