Grid View Update for DVR Program Guide - WHEN????

I have only had 5 minutes to look at this but at a quick glance it looks great!!!

I have been posting nothing but hate for the new Android app for the last few days so its nice to see something this exciting.

Bring it to the Roku as soon as possible pretty please… (and don’t change it to that horrible new UI style)

I agree! Roku please! I have 4 of them plus 3 FireXX products but Roku first please…

Seeing this new grid even in JUST the web app makes me smile. Hopefully it won’t be long until it’s integrated into PMP since that’s where I do 90% of my DVR programming and live TV consumption.

Thank you Plex!!!

I am really excited about the new guide grid view update. It looks great!!!

Unfortunately I have found a bug or at least one would think its a bug. Its probably best to start a new thread on it but I can mention it here. I know my guide layout fairly well, so for example, I know that channel 550 is BBCA (BBC America HD). If I navigate in the grid view guide to channel 550 and click “Watch” or the play icon Plex promptly navigates to channel 126 which is indeed BBCA but BBC America SD.

At the very least it list the channel as the SD channel 126 not channel 550.

I have to play with it a bit more but it seems to do this with all the channels I have tested.

@Octavean can you grab some screenshots and possibly logs that can be sent to someone in Plex Engineering.

I think I can do that.

This pic demonstrates what I am referring to.

Take note that I clicked on “Watch Now” channel 596 FXM (HD) at the top of the screenshot. However, PMS tuned to channel 141 FXM (SD). You can also see that the movie “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” is in fact in SD as it doesn’t fill the preview window in the proper 16:9 ratio rather its in 4:3. In full screen mode it is clearly SD 4:3 ratio as well.

Edit:

Now for the logs,…

OK,…

I think this is it:

Edit again:

One thing of note. I have tried using a Plex Client on an Apple TV and while the grid guide is not activated there (it uses the same old guid system as it did before) it seems to navigate to the proper HD channel not the erroneous SD channel.

At this point I am curious as to what would happen if I setup a new recording. Will it record the HD channel or the SD variation. How about existing recordings setup before this?

I guess I will find out soon as I have three recordings previously scheduled for tonight:

Supergirl 8-9pm
Dietland 9-10:01pm
X Company 10-11pm

I would try removing the SD duplicates from your available channels in the Settings/Server/Live TV & DVR. I use an HDHomerun and did it from there and then Plex won’t see the channels at all.

That would be my suggestion as well. I have posted a message on our internal Slack channel regarding this issue with a link to the thread for your screenshots and log files.

I thought about that as a possible work around but I am a bit reluctant to do that at this point. There are a couple of reasons for this.

One such reason is that when using a portable device to watch Live TV such as an iPad / iPhone the SD channels load faster and perform better overall then the HD channel. They (SD and HD) also tend to look the same on a small screen like iPad or iPhone.

Another such reason is that I would have to go through each channel with a fine toothed comb because in some cases there is only an SD channel. One such example is the “Chiller” channel on channel 112 (I think) that has no HD counterpart. So to be sure I would have to go through hundreds of channels manually,…SD channels I actually want to keep.

That makes sense. It did take some time to whittle the correct channels down as my cable provider has the same stations on at least three or four channel numbers and we are using two HDHomerun Prime units, but I am happy with the results. I hope you find a solution that will work for you.

It also might be worth pointing out that I would like to see what initiating a new recording through the guide grid (or search) will yield. If all the recordings are in HD then while this bug may be problematic it isn’t interfering with the main way I interface with Plex DVR.

I typically don’t watch Live TV or recorded media through the Web interface. I usually only setup recording through the Web interface. When I setup recordings I always specify the channel to be sure its the HD version.

So we will see how this goes after a little experimentation.

Glad to see the guide. Actually was considering installing Emby based off some comments, I did as a test, did not like and then saw the grid came out. Good timing!

Grid is now working in the web interface, so Roku and the Windows App can’t be far behind.

OK, little update.

I setup a test recording from the new Grid Guide . Cartoon Network channel 633 “Craig of the Creek” which just completed. This is with an HDHomeRun Prime:

So the test recording went to completion and recorded from the correct
HD channel not SD.

More poking around might be necessary but right now it looks like HD recordings can be made without issue from the Web interface Grid Guide when specifying the channel (which I always do).

Its Live TV that defaults to the SD channel when navigating using the Web interface Grid Guide.

Client software doesn’t seem to be affected by this.

If that is the extent of it I can live with it until its fixed. It’s not ideal but it is serviceable and its a great improvement having the Grid Guide in some form!!!

So I am one happy camper,…overall,…for the most part,…

OK, I tried another test of the bug.

In this test I opened two browser windows for PMS. In one I had the new web grid guide and in the other I switched to “Discover” mode and looked for an HD channel. Since the “Discover” mode doesn’t have the full lineup it was difficult to find an HD channel and in fact I could only find 1 which was channel 667 AMC (HD).

Tuning to the channel this way worked and was easily identifiable as HD however, the listed channel number was channel 142 AMC (SD).

Switching to the other browser page with PMS “Channels” grid guide selected and selecting the same channel 667 AMC (HD) resulted in a clearly identifiable SD channel being tuned to and was listed as channel 142 AMC (SD).

For the purposes of this test “Anger Management” was playing on Channel 667 AMC (HD) and Channel 142 AMC (SD) during the test interval.

Edit:

The previously scheduled records all completed without issue and were in HD:

Supergirl channel 611 WPIX11 HD
Dietland channel 667 AMC HD
X Company channel 591 Ovation HD
