Group Movies like Indiana Jones, Saw, etc...

Was trying to find this feature in Plex after recently installing it and couldn't.  Did a quick google about grouping movies in Plex and found this thread.  When I opened it and saw it was started in 2011, I thought well then it must be there and I am just missing it, but alas it would appear not.

I have come to plex from WMC and the way that worked meant even that had collections for films.

Please add this feature Devs. I recently switched to Plex from XBMC and Signed up for lifetime pass. This is the feautre I miss most from XBMC.

Are you guys voting for this feature in the thread I posted? Asking for it in here won’t get anywhere since this isn’t a feature request thread!

How can we vote?

When I click the links, I get:

Sorry, we couldn't find that!

You do not have permission to view this forum.

Wow really? Just look for either “movie collections” or “auto movie collections” in the feature requests section. I believe you either have to comment in the thread or like the first post.

Hummmmmmmmmm wow 2011 ? Just came across this thread also ! After finishing my tweeking of XBMC ! for my 2 HTPC I came across PLEX in my reading because I have a Samsung DVD player that supports it ! Come to find out its alittle behind from the others with Auto Grouping collections and was trying to get the FanArt screen background to show better its 99% not visible !

I'm going to go ahead and throw my +1 on the pile here too.  Long series like Harry Potter, Star Wars and Saw take up a ton of room in the UI, and one of the things I miss most about XMBC as the ability to group them into a single "stack" per series and just have that stack open up like a folder structure when it is selected.

Similarly, I just added 2 volumes of Pixar Short Films to my library, and they are scattered all over the place.  It would be wonderful if I could group them under a series so that I just see "Pixar Short Films Vol. 1" and "Pixar Short Films Vol. 2" in the UI, and only see the individual items when I select the parent series.

guys, voting here doesn't help, it won't get seen. I also just noticed that voting for feature requests is only available to plex pass members.

all "votes" get seen....

+1's are just waste space (it is not like anyone is every going to sit down and count all the +1s in everything thread to work out which has the most)

How to they get seen when this isn’t a feature request thread?

people have eyes, and use them for reading... it isn't hard to tell what is popular and what isn't when you spend enough time here, just because someone does not have access to the feature request forum does not mean they are not heard and the OP was definitely posting a request here.

I was under the assumption that feature requests were only honored in the “feature requests” section.

I used to be a great fan and supporter of Media Browser since many years....

And the last version, MB3 has such a feature (named box sets based on a tag in the folder name or the user of a "collection.xml" metadata file).

Since I have discovered Plex (which I consider much more "user friendly" than XBMC for my kids and my wife), I am running both Plex and MB3 at home.

I am hesitating to move definitively from Media Browser to Plex or vice-versa.

- Plex's server part can run on my NAS (Synology running 24/7) while MB3 can only run on my HTPC (up and running only if someone in front of TV in the living room)

- But I am afraid to lose the grouping and the ease of use for my kids (they navigate in a single big collection containing "cartoons" and "group of cartoons")...

No idea about how the DEVS will (possibly) implement grouping in Plex..

But maybe could it worth to consider a solution making the co-existence of Plex and MB3 possible/easier on top of the very same structure of shared folders...

Don't shoot at me because I suggest I could be using both MB3 and Plex.

Who wouldn't like have both a BMW M5 and a Porsche Panamera GTS in his garage and use one or the other depending on his mood  :P

In your case you could just create a new section that had all the kids stuff in it.  That would do what you want as far as giving your kids access to just their stuff.  Once they went into the section would show all the cartoons.  Has the added benefit of allowing you to secure it to just them by creating a plex id and only giving it access to the kids stuff.

Yes, I did a section with only the cartoons, but inside that section, I want to group cartoons like the "Pixar Short Film", various "Looney Tunes"...

Within MB3, kids can press "play" at a group level. Doing so, all the cartoons in the group are played automatically - either shuffled or in a sequence.

This is what I am really interested in actually, more than by a simple grouping.

I also have collections of ripped DVD with cartoons (Madagascar penguins tv series, Tintin, Barbapapa, kung fu panda tv series, ...). The best approach to group those is exactly as made for TV series: A DVD Collection = a TV serie and each DVD = a Season. But also here I would be interested in being able to play the whole content of a Season, shuffled or in a sequence.

And.. Thx for the tip to secure access to sections... !

Any Plex developer is listening to users needs ?

The devs and employees are never, let me repeat that , are never going to promise anything or give you release times for anything. as a company policy.

there are collections and sort order names you can use currently to group things together. When there might be a inline grouping like a sub folder i do  not know. I personally just use the sort order name to get the ones want together

a quick filter by collection and date released gives me all the Marvel movies in order.

how did you manage to sort by order name. i cant find that setting in PHT? or was it on a custom skin?

change the sort title in the server. and it will stay in that order in all clients players
