Server Version#: 1.23.4 (QNAP NAS)
Player Version#: All
Hi there. I’ve googled and found a lot of conflicting information about h.265 files and Plex Severs. I’m hoping someone can clear things up a bit.
I have a QNAP NAS running Plex on my network. Everything works perfectly with most files that I’ve thrown at it. (including big 4K files).
I purchased a lifetime Plex premium account since it’s the one app that just works for me most of the time. I recently copied some h.265 mp4 files into my Plex sync folder and they never appeared. I tried manually syncing, I tried simplifying the file names, I tried a lot of things. Nothing seems to work.
On my NAS, I have folders for each type of media. (Movies, Television, etc). Plex has full access to these folders.
The naming convention of the files in question is the same as the other files in that same server.
The only difference with these files are that they are h.265 and MP4 rather than MKV. I’m going to try to put them into the Other folder and see if that makes a difference, I’ve been using Plex for many years, and this is the first time I’ve seen files simply not ever sync. Usually if there’s a problem, I can still see them in Plex, but they give me a playback error.
Thanks! You’ve given me a place to start at least.
It appears that the problem may be the fact that they are h265 mp4 files? The file sizes with this codec are pretty great, but I found a couple websites that suggested the only way to get them to play on Plex was to handbrake them to h265 mkv. Is there any way around this?
MP4 or MKV does not matter. They are simply containers, like envelopes, holding the video/audio/subtitle tracks. Plex recognizes and works with both.
You can try remuxing the files into a MKV container. Use MKVToolNix. It will copy the video/audio/etc tracks from the MP4 container to a MKV container.
If that works, then the MP4 container was probably damaged somehow.
Handbrake will re-encode, not copy, the video. That can help if there are problems with the video itself.
