Basically PMS version 1.8.1.4139 was the first version I have ever had to uninstall. The platform is a Synology DS1815+ NAS running DSM 6.1.3-15152 Update 3.
I rolled back to PMS version 1.7.6.4058, although, PMS version 1.8.0.4109 worked well enough as I recall. I might update to version 1.8.0.4109 again but for now everything seems to be working fine.
The problem’s exhibited with PMS version 1.8.1.4139 wee:
PMS would go offline and could not be brought back online without the NAS being rebooted. Starting and stopping the service in DSM did nothing.
PMS appeared to go offline due to scheduled recordings in Plex DVR. So I lost a few days recordings before seeing the correlation.
I still have PMS version 1.8.1.4139 running on my Windows Server 2012 Essentials box but I don’t schedule recordings on it typically.
Anyone else have such issues on a Synology NAS?
I have been having issues since the 1.7 and greater of PMS, specifically the DVR function, everything else was stable during my testing but recordings went from crap recordings to ones that take hours to “build” from the new chunked model of recording, which is not acceptable since it screwed up tuners or overburdened system that was running fine with previous releases. I am running on Synology DS1513+ as main server , secondary server which is QNAP didn’t seem to have such a huge issue but it really wasn’t used to record more of play back server. I think it may be processor and band width problem and this new “chunked” recording method building the real file takes hours as a result kills system that would normally work fine. I think if they gave us option for LiveTV & chunked vs No Live TV and Single file that may solve alot of peoples problems until they get the live TV a little more refined or more efficient method of building real file from chunked.
My experience with 1.8.1.4139 has been that when making a recording it never moves the recording to the player Tv show view. I looked at the PMS running with the resource monitor and everytime I can that the Transcoder is still running and never stops. Always have to restart PMS. I am using the Synology 716+II.
Ok. I was thinking of upgrading to 1.8.1.x because my recordings were never finalizing. But… I installed the latest record engine and updated the tuners, and voila!, I had a successful recording. I’m still not going to upgrade until I read more positive reviews.
@lmolter ,
Not sure how wide spread the recording issue hanging is but From what alot of us have experienced on Synology Nas units that anything beyond 1.6.1 seems to have issues, from the chunked recording problem where it takes long long time to try and build the real “TS” file to locking up tuners and such. There have been people that windows platforms work fine and my QNAP seems to be ok for the most part (limited testing) but 1.6.1 seems to be best version for Synology Nas and some other platforms due to the changes for Live tv seem to have caused some nasty issues for a significant part of the user base.
If your on synolgoy i would NOT upgrade to 1.8.1.x just yet if your not on that platform then you can try but I would keep old install files handy as some people don’t keep old install packages for just such an issue.
@skraemertx , I have the 1.6.1 install files handy, just for this purpose. Unfortunately, there were EPG issues and well as lack of tuner-awareness. I have 4 tuners, but Plex is unable to use the available tuners if they span hardware. Example: Tuner 1 is recording (aka busy), Plex chooses tuner 2. Another show starts, but tuner 3 or 4 (which are idle) are not selected and the recording fails. The fall season is approaching and I spent the extra money on more tuners just for that purpose. I think I’ll stay with the HDHR DVR for the time being. The video and audio issue reportedly have been addressed in the 0815 firmware and recording engine updates. But… maybe the NAS is to blame for all this. Can’t really swap that out for a different one right now.
Just to be clear I have a Syology DS1815+ that was manufactured some time in May 2017 based on its 175xxxxxxx serial number. It only has 2GB of RAM and typically RAM usage hovers around ~85% and higher in DSM with Plex running.
When encoding a stream the Intel Atom C2538 can definitely get pegged but generally does a fair job of streaming without issues (depending on the attributes of the video skipping ahead repeatedly can cause delays).
I suspect that more RAM would be helpful and I have a spare DDR3 DIMM from an older laptop I no longer use but I think its slightly slower RAM. It might be worth experimenting with.
For now though PMS version 1.7.6.4058 seems to be working fine. I think I’ll wait it out until something newer then 1.8.1.4139 is released. If that newer as of yet unreleased update cause issues on my NAS I’ll fall back to 1.8.0 or 1.7.6.
Ideally I want to be able to keep going forward because a lot of the features I want such as Live TV and DVR functionality on Apple TV just don’t work very well. I don’t want to get stuck on some outdated version of PMS.
I’m on Mac OS and started having similar problems with 1.8.4.
Now running 1.7.5 and all is fine.
