Half of my videos won't play or even show up in Plex

Hi there,

Why is it that Plex won’t play or see half of my collection thats on my PC? Like very regular MP4 files or DVD folders? I like Plex better than Kodi, but Kodi sees anything and plays it without problems, Plex is very picky playing different file formats. Can I change anything about that? Update something or is it just not a good player?

Regards

Wouldn’t it be easier to make the player compatible to any filename than to make users of the player change all the names of their video files, it seems absurd to me… :frowning:
If Kodi can do it, why can’t Plex do it?

Have you seen a filename parser? Ive written a few in my time, and they can quickly get bloated and out of control. By limiting the supported formats you can radically speed up the file scanning, and make the media matcher FAR more reliable. I can point to a dozen TV shows where they share the same show name, but the year is different. Overall Plex does support quite a few non-standard formats, but always recommends using their standard format, because otherwise it can break at any time.
