Handling audio library on Plex with multiple versions of an album

I haven’t messed much with my audio library on Plex. Mostly because my files have been a mess for years after a hardware issue.

Anyway, last time I added files to the library I had issues with the scrapper. I am not sure what the best practice is for me because I have a lot of music in multiple editions and I don’t know how to differentiate them, other than manually. Some albums I may have some combination of a vinyl rip, or the Japanese release with bonus tracks, the deluxe edition, the re-release with remastered tracks, or what have you. A lot of vinyl rips I have, the tracks are labeled A1, A2, B1, B2 and such. I’d rather not rename them. Will Plex handle those? I also have a number of bootleg demo recordings and live music. I am looking for suggestions on how to handle all of this.

These should get you started.

Vinyl track “numbering” is not supported.

Thanks, that’s very helpful. This may require a lot of thought. The problem with using the internal tagging is it pretty much makes sharing my bootlegs impossible.

How so?

Quick, Juice - throw in another link for Mp3Tag:
http://www.mp3tag.de/

Ok, I will. That will help in a big way.

Changing the tag changes the hash.

Ah, understood. I guess you’d have to have 2 different data storages then - one for your use and one for torrenting.
Or convince ‘the scene’ that using vinyl track numbering is rubbish, as it falls foul of many players out there. The track number meta tag officially only supports ‘number’ content.

The other option is to use no metatags at all but adapt the file names and folder organisation.
If you follow the linked posts above, Plex will handle multi-disc albums even completely without metatags correctly (at least in most cases).
I already tried this with double albums in dts audio (which doesn’t support embedded metatags).

LOL, yeah, I’m sure that will happen. There’s just a number of problems, the vinyl numbering is just one. I’ll probably just use hard links or symlinks. Not ideal but easy. Bootlegs, live concerts, and special versions are another if they aren’t tagged. If I tag them, I can’t share them or hard link. Hopefully most of it is already tagged. I’m sure that would be standard but I’m not sure as it has been a long time since I’ve touched attempted to sort my music collection. Internal tagging is great but that’s the biggest draw back. Maybe I’ll look to see if there is some sort of external tagging that can be done, like an nfo file or something. I think ultimately it’s just going to have to be a painful case by case basis, much harder than my movie and TV libraries. I may look into a separate program to manage audio, although I don’t know if any would be better than Plex. It’s really just an issue with the scene and tagging itself.

Audio tagging is very varied.
The biggest issue with pre-tagged files for Plex is the inclusion of ‘disc numbers’ in the ‘AlbumTitle’ tag.
This is a no-no.
