Hardware Acceleration Update?

I had a search and I can’t find any update on hardware Acceleration on AMD processors since 2023.

It’s actually been over 5 years ago that I last read there were plans to add it.

Also, I don’t think this list is still up to date? As it’s missing some newer QNAP models

What I don’t understand is that some list that hardware acceleration is supported with an Nvidia graphics card. My current NAS supports an external graphics card but can’t use it for Plex hardware acceleration? (TVS-673e)

Also, the QNAP website seems to allude to the Nvidia graphics card being supported for Plex (with no specific reference to needing an Intel processor, I’m sure I must be missing something):

AMD does not support it.

@JayLauderdale

I am the maintainer of the NAS Compatibility List.

QNAP normally tells me about all their new products as well as being retired.

Which models are you referencing please ?

If you look at the bottom of the sheet, you’ll see the most recent update
which indeed shows it needs some info from all the vendors.
( I will work on that )

As a general rule,

  1. QTS and QuTS are supported
  2. X86_64 and ARMv8 (64 bit) architectures are supported.

Hi @ChuckPa !

Sorry I think I’m still misunderstanding, as the processor in my NAS is 64 bit X86

Apparently I’m mistaken and the ‘e’ model which I have, doesn’t have space for an external GPU but the non ‘e’ model does and that’s still not acknowledged on this spreadsheet, so it seems that even with an Nvidia graphics cards, if you have an AMD processor, it’s still not supported?

Regarding the missing models, I looked again at the spreadsheet and I must have got it wrong unless it was recently updated, because I found the models I was previously looking at, now! Apologies for my error.

Do we know if AMD support for hardware acceleration is no longer being worked on? (It’s been quite a number of years now)

Thanks

AMD HW support will come with the rest of the transcoder upgrade.

The first thing we needed to do was tackle HEVC encoding support in the existing transcoder and PMS.

With that complete, the next step is the full transcoder upgrade.
This is where support for the other GPUs like AMD and Intel will happen
( this is my understanding of the plan. I don’t know if it will be phased implementation or one big update )

The AMD support which exists is only for SDR support on Linux workstations where you add the AMD drivers yourself. It was a proof of concept effort by the old team.
