Hardware Transcode

I have a Matrox MGA g200ew video card in my unraid box. Can this be used for hardware transcoding?

this card does not appear to have any support for modern hardware video decoding/encoding capabilities.

you need a supported intel IGPU (part of the cpu) or a supported nvidia gpu.

I have dual xeon 5650 with that card. I run unraid. Is there any recommendation for addon?

sorry I have no idea about the unraid specifics, so hopefully someone else with more direct experience will reply.

otherwise, your primary option is probably an applicable nvidia card, of which depends entirely upon what you are trying to accomplish and how much your budget is.

p2000 are often recommended, gtx 1050/1060/1650 are possibly cheaper alternatives.

if you intend on transcoding 4k content, you should prepare yourself for extra pain.

you might want to read the whole thread @ Plex, 4k, transcoding, and you - aka the rules of 4k - a FAQ

hello.

I am new to Plex HW transcoding and i want to know if mine has been set up right.
CPU: i7 3770k "4.3Ghz
GPU: Nvidia Quadro P2000
RAM: 32GB
my system is decent I would say but looking online i am seeing people doing far better on much less hardware. I have Plex Pass (monthly at the moment)

I have some films in “4K (HEVC Main 10 HDR)” and when stream them to my phone at 720p my CPU goes to 100% and my P2000 only goes to 4% If I add any more streams it starts to buffer.

I have tried other films that are in 1080p and i haven’t managed to get over 3 streams at once. my cpu always seems to be at 100% and my P2000 never goes above 10% max really.

I have HW enabled in settings and the Quadro drivers installed. I have tried restarts and all sorts. any advice??

Ouch. My dual xeon system rarely has cpu use over 10% and that’s without hardware transcode. I’ve had 6 streams at once without breaking a sweat. I don’t really need hardware I was just thinking it be nice. I did a test on my i3 laptop running server and it will hardware transcode however the xeons still do it better in software. Incredible performance.

Have i done something wrong here? this seems really bad to me. any advice would be great

No idea. Did you try to reboot after toggling the hardware option? Compare results with it off? My guess is the GPU drivers aren’t being used. Is this a Windows box or unraid?

rebooted after installing drivers and turning on HW acceleration. I am running windows 10 Pro. I have a feeling that my cpu is too old but plex states that it should be just fine

I am guessing you are using Windows 10 for the host OS that PMS resides on. Zero copy HW transcoding is not fully supported yet with Nvidia using the public release of PMS for Windows. You can try the new transcoder preview available only via the forum.

So you think I would have a better experience by installing a preview build of Plex. Does this preview build have a better integrated version of HW GPU transcoding?

If so, where would I find this download?

At the forum thread I linked in my last post.

Okay thank you. I will definitely look into it.
