Hardware Transcoding Failed

GPU: AMD RX 550

With 1.32.5, hardware transcoding is working, even though Android client not working.

Updated to 1.32.6/1.32.7, PMS got the errors below, it seems that you shoud update radeonsi driver too!!!

really hard to tell from that block of error messages but it looks like either:

  1. There is a system library conflict (Error relocating)
    -or-
  2. The card isn’t supported by the drivers (2017 GPU??) – what is the media ?
    -or-
  3. The transcoder regression is impacting AMD as well.
    -or-
  4. you have HDR tone mapping enabled on the AMD – (AMD is SDR only at present)

If you wish, you can quick try this as it’s known to work.

Here’s my reply:

  1. No, I even tried to delete the .so lib and the soft link in the cache, but after PMS restarted there is an exactly same .so file.
  2. AMD RX 550, I mentioned before.

  5. 1.32.5 works, but as I mentioned, Android client is disfunctional with this version.

I don’t know if you’re aware yet.

  1. We’ve reverted PMS 1.32.6 and 1.32.7 due to flaws we missed. (HW transcoding fails for most users)

  2. 1.32.5.7349 is now public

Which “Android client” as there are several; Android TV (Tv sets), Android mobile/tablet, Nvidia Shield.

As soon as we base PMS resolved (almost ready).
we will reapply the fixes which would be in PMS 1.32.6 and 1.32.7

Tested with 1.32.6.7515, HW transcoding worked, and Android client is also OK, but CPU loading is high up to 60%, not like a real GPU hardware transcoding !?

not subtitles, there is no difference of CPU loading when disabled subtitiles.

and FYI, I restarted PMS, and CPU loading looks good now…5%-, just like 1.32.5…

Play with Plex/web.

  1. It’s the most basic player
  2. If everything works on Plex/web ( transcoding, tonemapping ) we’re good.

Saying “Android client” can be: Android TV, Android phone, Android tablet, Android set top box (nvidia shield, etc). Like saying “Apple client is dysfunctional” … not specific enough.

We’ll make another player thread if need be

I have provided enough contexts for you if you read the info above carefully.

“Android client is disfunctional” means if hardware transcoding is enabled, android client cannot play any video and only with android client, all other platform clients are OK. And this issue was confirmed and replicated on my server by your team members @sixones. And he said:

I’ve filled the issue with the server team, even though its only a problem on Android, it seems the transcoded video is corrupt and theres not much we can do to solve that on the client.

Thanks . the server team think they know what the problem is, and they are looking into it.

As I said, I guess the fix below in PMS 1.32.7 is for this issue:

Are you stating that 60% CPU utilization on this CPU. where 800% utilization being displayed is what Linux will show if the CPU is fully consumed is how you define “Not working” ?

Also, we have one item to we ask you to test. Specifically , PMS 1.32.1 and see if the behavior is the same.

The CPU loading is OK (<10%) with 1.32.6.7521, even with ass subtitles. This is not a problem now.

The problem is Android client cannot start to play any movie (stuck at loading) with hw transcoding, and only Android client, all other clients are OK, such as Web/Windows/Mac/iOS. This problem is started from 1.32.5, since that version starts to support amd gpu hw transcoding on linux.

I saw 1.32.6.7521 merged #14384, but it’s no difference with ** 1.32.5 **
