I wonder if someone could answer for me what features does hardware transcoding support, I know it does real time transcoding, however what about optimisation, sync and dvr/dvr commercial removal etc, I ask because I am considering buying an Intel NUC for a new server and the quad core Gemini lake one looks like it will work well, however I wonder if it has enough horse power, if some of the features in plex do not use hardware transcoding and use cpu instead.
Really depends what you are asking the NUC to do.
Streaming in house to 1 or 2 player that NUC is likely to handle everything.
But multiple streams of high resolution and high bit rate and BIG files and players wanting transcoding and remote users WILL change things.
Just buy it and code your media correctly!
FYI I had an Skull NUC i7 as my main server and very few issues - but them i have all my media re-encoded as MP4 to work.
Hi thanks for the reply, all of my media bar some Blu-ray rips are mp4 with aac, and my blu-ray 1080p or 4K I make sure has an ac3 track as first choice (my only 4K tv can play ac3 and is the only device to have access to my library containing these type of files), I currently have a haswell i5 laptop as my server and hw transcoding works perfectly but I would like to replace it with a nuc, however the thing that I wanted to know was if dvr which I intend to add in the future can make use of hw transcoding via the igpu or whether uses software transcoding, if it does use the igpu I will go with the Gemini lake, if not I will go with the new i3 that is due out, I just don’t want to waste my money on an i3, if I don’t need it.
Hey Richard,
I cannot definitively say whether my NUC was using hardware transcoding - but i had it set to do so.
My suggestion is get the biggest /newest one you can afford.
Upgrading along the way is more expensive than going big and getting it right the first time.
I know I could have saved thousands had I skipped a few upgrades…
You can use the table here to work out which CPU in the Intel family you will need to accomplish your goals. Make sure not to get the Mobile CPU’s, as they do not always have Quick Sync.
I have an Intel Celeron J3355 (Apollo Lake) in my NUC, and it is capable of transcoding around 2x 1080p HEVC streams.
I hope that helps.
