I’m having buffering problems when attempting to watch live TV via plex. Interestingly, the buffering problems only occur when using hardware transcoding. Any ideas?
Here’s the setup:
- HDHomeRun connect duo plugged directly into antenna in attic. Gigabit and PoE
- 100% signal strength, signal quality, and symbol quality reported by HDHomerun.
- Ubiquiti Unify gigabit switch and APs
- Nearly perfect wifi reception with 70+ MB/s write speeds to Synology 918+ from laptops
- Synology 918+ running 64 bit plex. 8GB memory. bonded nics. 3x WD Red 10TB drives in SHR.
The above seems like a solid setup, meaning hardware and network are up to spec. Non-transcoded streaming from the HDHR works perfectly via various apps and platforms, both wired and wifi. (Channels, HDHomeRun app, EyeTV, etc) Plex hardware transcoding is perfect on any other content thrown at it. Even 20GB+ with 7.1 and DTS mkv files are transcoded without buffering.
When software transcoding is used is used on a stream from the HDHR, playback does not suffer from buffering. When hardware transcoding is enabled, streams start out at lower bandwidth and eventually might make it up to 1080p but there is buffering every few seconds and switching between bit rates. Setting a fixed bitrate on the client results in more frequent buffering.
