HDHomeRun Quatro, Various Plex Media Servers

Hello,

I have a HDHomeRun Quatro, and a brand new Synology DS218+. All sorts of videos at various quality play GREAT with no buffering to my Roku and AppleTV from Plex. However, using the HDHomeRun Quatro and the Live TV option, it constantly buffers.

What is going on?

I installed some app called “channels” on my Apple TV. PERFECT video on the same channels from the HDHOMERUN with NO ISSUES whatsoever.

On the Plex app on both Roku, and AppleTV, constant BUFFERING.

I’ve turned the quality down to 4Mbps 720P on the video options on the devices, with no luck. Again, recorded videos transcode great, but video from the HDHOMERUN constantly BUFFER.

Also, I’ve used another device as a Plex media server as well and had the same issues, however, I had issues transcoding recorded media.

The HDHOMERUN Quatro I believe does not transcode the live stream which the plex server then has to do in order for the plex players to be able to stream it successfully. Chances are the Synology might be experiencing issues transcoding on the fly in order to play the Live TV stream.

I have the HDHOMERUN Quatro as well and when watching Live TV, I can see my plex server transcode the stream. You can either go with the HDHOMERUN connect which does transcoding but i believe is limited to 2 tuners and you should be able to stream live tv successfully.

So, this is DS218+, which features hardware transcoding, can transcode 4K Ultra HD, and, like I said, transcodes stored media just fine. I bought this model specifically because of these features. Are there any options here other than just pointing at the NAS which seems to be powerful enough to transcode a single stream from the HDHomeRun? I don’t want to just keep trying different hardware on guesses.

Yeah, I have great networking equipment, and no throughput constraints. Literally the HDHomeRun and The NAS are on the same switch, no wifi. The Roku is in the same room as the Wifi router (a newer, mesh model) and has great signal strength. I am going to try another media server tonight because I feel this is some coding issue or incompatibly that is not being addressed. I’ve tried many combinations of settings to no avail.

Update: Emby media server on the synology, DS218+, hardware transcoding works via VA-API default settings, but had to disable “on the fly subtitle extraction.” Now watching LiveTV with NO buffering, watching back-end I see 61fps. I’ll try Plex again in the future hopefully the get the support for it.

Having the same issue with Plex and my Apple TV 4K (in my case I’m using HD Homrun Prime).

The buffering is unwatchable.

With Emby using VA-API I’m getting no buffering.

This is really unfortunate cause, in my opinion, Plex has a fairer trial period with plex pass (which allows you to test these things).

Frustrated that I might have to buy an emby premiere to get this to work right. Darn!

PS - this is the same case with plex and my Samsung tv. But surprisingly Amazon tv stick it works with no buffering at all.

Yep this sounds exactly what was happening to me. Then I used Emby for a while, and it had its own series of stability problems and I finally gave up on it as well. The hardware live tv transcoding WAS working fine with the plex setup and then it wasn’t with no changes. Very frustrating. Currently I’m using an app called channels which, because it runs on the Apple TV, doesn’t have to deal with transcoding. It also has a dvr which runs on the synology nas. So at least for now I’ve got PMS for stored media, and channels for live tv and dvr.

Also there’s a part missing here that I didn’t post. I did the manual x64 bit of plex which had hardware transcoding actually working. Worked for a while and then it just stopped working without constant buffering
