Hardware transcording is not working properly

Server Version#: DSM 7.2-64570 Update 1, DVA3221 with GTX 1080 Ti installed.
Player Version#: 1.29.2.6364 (Synology default insatall version)

Dear,

I want to report about the hardware transcording is not working properly on my server. (I have Plex Pass subscription)
First of all, the hardware transcording(GPU) works for maximum 2 contents at the same time. And newer update than the current version(1.29.2.6364) including 1.32.5.7349, 1.32.6.7371 doesn’t work at all.

So I can’t update to new version while i tried to update and test every versions so far, but it gets worse (The GPU is not working during the transcording, but only CPU is working).

I wish this problem could be solved as soon as possible since i could not update for the later version, nor to imporve the server system.

  1. C3538 CPU does not support HW transcoding. It does not have the capability.

  2. No Synology DVA models have been submitted to Plex for testing and inclusion on the NAS Compatibility List.

  3. Do you have Synology-provided Nvidia drivers for DSM installed ?
    (Nvidia drivers are proprietary and not supplied by Plex)

  • I’m not telling about transcoding for CPU, I’m asking about GPU HW transcoding.

Please confirm what you are asking?

You want either :

  1. which version of Plex works on DSM 7 with the DVA3221 and Nvidia GPU ?
    -or-
  2. to know which Synology NAS will work with Hardware transcoding ?

I’m having difficulty understanding what you’re asking for because I don’t know what you previously had which worked.

I am the Synology support engineer at Plex. I wrote all the new DSM 7 support package.

I also support QNAP NAS systems and Linux hosts.

If I know what you previously were using successfully, then I can understand better what is actually missing because I’ve never supported Nvidia on Synology (DSM 6)

You never read my post in detail.

  • 1.29.2.6364 version is working now, but it has a limit of 2 contents at the same time.

  • Synology DVA3221 include Nvidia’s GTX 1050 graphic card as a factory setting
    and Nvidia’s Driver included in DSM too.

  • So it supports GPU by DSM as a default, but Plex’s HW transcoding not working properly,

  1. Because I’ve not seen / worked on a DVA model NAS, I have not written in the installer to support them. We have DS model NAS systems in our lab.

  2. Without having access to a DVA series NAS, I don’t know how it is structured in DSM. Without that knowledge, I cannot adjust the PMS installer to support it.

I am sorry but you’re using PMS on an unsupported Synology product.

No, mine works unlimited too when I run PMS on the windows 10,11.
It has a limit on Synology PMS only.

If the transcoding doesn’t get limited by PMS, why every update versions later than 1.29.2.6364 are working differently? I presume it’s affected by PMS.

Since PMS has an option for hardware transcording support (Plex Pass), GPU HW transcoding issue is caused by PMS not Nvidia driver.
