Hardware Transcoding Issues DS218+ and DS918+

Server Version#: 1.32.3.7089-7000
Player Version#: ALL
Plex Media Server Logs_2023-05-31_15-40-36.zip (1.0 MB)

Recently, I’ve just noticed that my DS218+ (Intel Celeron J3355 - Quick Sync Video approved) is no longer able to hardware transcode. I’ve tried everything I could find on the net (except for uninstalling and reinstalling) to diagnose and try to fix, but to no avail. Something is not right. Further, my friend with a DS918+ is having the exact same issues.

I’ve created a new test server on my NUC on the same network and works fine - hardware transcoding operational. I’ve also created a test server via Docker on my NAS with the same result - no hardware transcoding. Seems to be localised to the NAS.

This is doing my head in…

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I gave logs to the Engineer tonight.

She is aware and working on it now.

You can revert to PMS build 6999 (previous) until it’s fixed.

Hello everyone,
I’d like to reopen the subject to get feedback on the ongoing investigations into the problem since the switch to DSM 7.2 for synology DS x18+ models.

Is there any progress on this issue?

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Best regards,

Having same issues on DS218± Works ok via Container manager (7.2) with 6999 but not after that version. Ive tried everything I can think of. Notice that release notes for 1.32.4.7164 claims to have fixed HW transcode faults for older GPU,s but in fact it makes no difference.

Would appreciate some feedback or advice but am staying with 6999 until problem is fixed. Do we know if problem is with Plex or Synology ??

The fixes for the ApolloLake CPUs is coming in the next release.

It took a bit to sort through the GeminiLake (J4xxx) and then the ApolloLake (J3xxx) driver issue.

You can always uninstall the native SPK (use the “Keep” option)
then install the lower version (6999) and be ok.

Just to make sure I understand correctly-- the release notes are incorrect, and 1.32.4.7164 does not actually contain the fix for #14338 yet?

The release note is not incorrect. It is a bit too vague. That update

  • (Transcoder) Hardware transcoding could fail to be used on older Intel GPUs on Linux (#14338)

addresses Intel Core -3xxx → -5xxx CPUs where Intel has not done their part supporting those chips with their Inte Media Driver as they should.

Everyone Synology-related is waiting for ApolloLake fix. The ApolloLake fix will be in the next PMS release. I confirmed with the Engineer last night.

It might be equally vaguely worded about “NAS platforms” since it impacts everything with a J3xxx CPU (ApolloLake) and some of the GeminiLake (J4xxx) CPUs across multiple vendors.

Thanks!

When will the update comming?
My Server version is 1.32.4.7164. Is the right version? This version of hardware acceleration still does not work

I had the same issue with my DS218+. These worked for me.

Either downgrade to 1.32.1.6999

or

Install an Engineer’s build 1.32.5.7145, this is what I’m using now.

I’m the version of Synology ’s suite. Is the downgrade just uninstall and install it?Can the original settings and data be retained?Still say everything needs to be repeated

DSM 6 – Just uninstall - all your data remains

DSM 7 – Uninstall – Use the first (default: “Uninstall only”) radio button.

( DSM 7 has the choices because of how packages work on DSM 7 )

There – I said it again!

ok!
I will have a try!

works on my 918+
thx so much!

Hi Joynaruto,
Thanks for the feedback
Are you using docker for your plexapp ?

Both docker and suit

Thanks for your quick reply
Do you use that docker image : lscr.io/linuxserver/plex:latest ?

Hi @Joynaruto , @gvanness , @ChuckPa

http://lscr.io/linuxserver/plex:latest (v1.32.3.7192) does not work on my 918+…
hardware transcoding disabled.

@_DR64

Only need to post / ping in one place. (I see all Synology & Linux posts)

ApolloLake fix is in the beta (1.32.4)

Disabled ? Logs ?
