Has anyone got Plex to work with Alexa & Fire TV?

Hi everyone,

Does anyone have Plex working correctly with Alexa and Fire TV? When I first set everything up Plex works correctly but after a few minutes if I say “Alexa, Ask Plex to play [movie title]” Alexa responds with Enjoy watching [movie title] on Fire TV but Plex does not play the movie. The only way to get things working again is to sign out of the Plex app on Fire TV and re-link my account. This is really inconvenient having to do this every time I want to watch something on Plex. I was just wondering if anyone had a soulution?

Did you set the Fire TV as the default player? Maybe it was trying to play to some other device.

Yeah the Fire TV is the default player. It’s the only player I use. Alexa specifically says enjoy watching on Fire TV but the movie never actually starts unless I sign out and back in

Please recreate and provide me the log from PMS and from the Fire TV.

Hi,

I have been unable to recreate this exact error so far today however, I have had another error that is stopping playback.

Everything was working as is should, for around an hour, I was switching between movies/shows with Alexa. I then closed Plex on my Fire TV and when I opened it again and requested a movie using Alexa I got the response "your player, fire TV does not appear to be online”. The only way to solve it was to sign out of Plex an Fire TV and sign in again. I have attached the logs from PMS and Frire TV. Actually, some of this doesn’t make sense. What was the video that failed to be played?

The file name & types I requested were: Apocalypse Now.MP4 and Commando.AVI but when I’ve had this happen previously I get the same “your player does not appear to be online” error regardless of what file I try to play.

I have sent you a PM with a detailed list of steps I took while replicating the issue. Hopefully it may help with troubleshooting.

I think this has to do with other reports we’ve gotten of the app with the new UNO interface having issues connecting to servers. Since you have a Plex Pass, you can try sideloading an older beta version to avoid this for now. Hopefully when the larger issue is resolved with the new app, this issue with Alexa will fix itself.

I’ve tried 5 or 6 different beta FWs now and I can’t get any of them to work correctly with Alexa. Everything is fine when I first set everything up but then they either don’t recognise the fire tv or Alexa recognises the command but doesn’t play the movie or Alexa just says uh oh, something went wrong.
