I have bought a new Synology NAS but had to recreate whole new environment as wanted to run Plex Media Server on the new NAS rather than on the Mac Mini which is also dated and cant be upgraded
I have now got everything set up and ready to migrate users over to the new server.
Is there any way I can globally add the replacement libraries to all users rather than editing each user and adding them
Unfortunately no.
There might have been a chance to migrate some of your data (i.e. the ‘played’ stats), but since you have already re-created all your libraries there is not much point now.
I am not bothered about the play stats i just have quite a few family members who access my media and i have 5 libraries i share with them all
I want to add the new libraries to each user but can only seem to do it on a one by one basis rather than a global add.
I do still have access to the old NAS and mac mini but i had no choice but to copy the media files across as the new NAS would not accept the existing NAS disks as is
No, I didn’t mean to transplant the hard drives. Just the main Plex database file.
But this requires network access to the Plex data folder on the new NAS, which is not available by default. You’ll have to create this network share yourself.
If I may augment here?
Synology fully supports migrating entire RAID volumes from one Synology NAS to another.
With the PMS data on the RAID volume, which is held intact through the migration,
after installing DSM for the new NAS and PMS again in Package Center,
When Plex starts up, it will find everything just as it was on the old NAS.
Not from the old NAS I had unfortunately
It was on the list they said it couldnt happen and I wasnt going to risk the new NAS wiping the disks and losing my data
The way I have Plex structured on the NAS, if you grabbed (zipped or direct copied) the Plex share, you would have all your metadata.
For total transparency otherwise, the only thing you would need do is make sure the new data shows up in the same shares as it was in before but this too can be changed on the fly.
