Have I broken my database?

I’m new to Plex. I bought a MyPassport Wireless Pro for storing my movies, and Plex worked so beautifully that I dove in and bought a PlexPass and added all my music too. Then it got more complicated. The NAS world is completely new to me, but when I’ve had a problem I’ve tried following advice on the forums. However, I’ve gotten too far and need advice from someone more experienced.

Here are the big problems I’ve had, and what I’ve done so far.

  1. Last week, I had a problem with changes to music metadata not sticking. Sometimes, rebooting the MyPassport (via the dashboard) would resolve it, but not always. Eventually, I followed the instructions for Repair a Corrupt Database, which seemed to work for a while.
  2. Yesterday I found I couldn’t add labels to any albums: “Your changes could not be saved.” I optimized database, scanned library files, and eventually tried to repair database again.
  3. While following those instructions, I received this error: “Error: no such index: index_title_sort_naturalsort”. The instructions said that was normal, so I continued with the remaining steps. It seems odd to me that the database is on my Mac (player) instead of the MyPassport drive (server) - is that right??
  4. Now I can’t play a movie: “An error occurred loading items to play.”

Additionally, I realized today that the (default) backup directory is a location on my Mac that did not exist, and thus there are no database backups. I do have regular Time Machine backups including the contents of ~/Library/Application Support/Plex/Plex Media Server/Plug-in Support, but would prefer some direction before messing with those files.

Finally, the “Download Database” button has never worked for me. It opens a Safari window that says “Safari can’t find the server.”

Can someone point me in the right direction? I imagine this might be very clear to someone with more experience. Apologies if I’ve missed something super obvious!

Server Version#: 1.20.1.3252
Player Version#: 1.18.0.1392-cf94f6a1

Check your log files for SQLITE3 error messages. You need debug level logs. Verbose logs contain too much information and can cause the files to wrap, missing important info. See Reporting issues with Plex Media Server.

See this thread. It is for Plex on Synology, but the error messages will be the same.

Thanks, checking the logs.

Am I right about it being a problem that my database is located on my player (Mac) instead of my server (MyPassport)? Could that be what keeps causing the database corruption in the first place?

The database, logs, etc are stored on the Plex Media Server (i.e. your WD NAS). See support article linked below for their location. The previously linked “Reporting issues…” support article details how to configure log levels and how to retrieve the logs.

Any logs you find on the Mac will be from Mac clients - Plex for Mac, Plex Media Player (unless, of course, you’re running Plex Media Server on your Mac).

That is for the Plex for Mac client. It has nothing to do with Plex Media Server running on a WD NAS.

Thank you so much @FordGuy61. You pointed me in the right direction and I’ve been able to get everything running smoothly again!
