Having an issue with my new NAS and plex

Server Version#:
Player Version#:

I am having a bit of an odd issue with plex on my Asustor AS-4004T NAS. It is connected to the network with 10gbe.

When I connect using my phones or my TVs clients. Everything runs beautifully.

However if I connect with a web client, it takes a long time to start, then hangs buffering a few seconds after it starts.

This is my first NAS, but I have Plex server running on a windows mini PC as well as on a Raspberry Pi and they both work without any issues.

I am at a loss as to what the issue may be since it’s only web clients that are effected.

Thanks in advance,

Jim

I am still messing around trying to figure what the cause is but I have some more information.

All my TV’s are connected to the local network and do not have issues with playback, but out of curiosity I turned the wifi off on my phone and discovered it then has the same issues.

Since i believe the CPU in the NAS is an ARM processor I figured it could be a transcoding issue. I then powered up my Pi Plex server to see if the issue was possibly that. It however had no issues, the CPU on the NAS gets to around 45% when attempting to stream and of course the Pi server runs at 100%.

I am not so sure it would be a CPU bottleneck and know it’s not a bandwidth bottleneck since my 1gbe pie would have the same issue. Debating if its just a problem with this NAS or a configuration issue of the NAS its self

Jim

The web app is the client type which requires transcoding most often.
Avoid it when using a server with a weak CPU.

Try using “Plex for Windows/Mac” or “Plex HTPC” instead. (separate downloads)

If you want to know why exactly it buffers, see Why is my video stream buffering? | Plex Support

It just seems odd to me that it could be a transcoding issue when the CPU never brakes 50% when attempting to stream from the NAS. It does not just buffer, it basically just stops completely.

As my library keeps growing, the single point of failure of a USB drive attached to a Raspberry Pi was becoming increasingly more devastating should it fail. I figured replacing the Pi with this particular NAS would be good enough since a Raspberry Pi works fine for my needs in and outside of my network. Apparently that may not be the case.

I think I may be doing a return on the NAS and getting one that supports hardware transcoding. The main purpose of getting the NAS was for Plex streaming and storing the media,
