Having problems with remote access/secure connections on T-Mobile

Yesterday, I built a DIY NAS using HexOS and got Plex running on it. I’m able to access it via remote access only using Plex Relay - I’m unable to directly connect, limiting playback to 720p. As far as I can tell, the main fix would be port forwarding, but I’m stuck with CGNAT, so that’s not an option. Another solution I found from Plex is DNS rebinding protection, though this also isn’t available to me because I guess T-Mobile doesn’t want you doing literally anything ever. Is there anything else I can look into? Thanks!

I got mine working by binding it to the host network in TrueNAS config.

Can you explain how to do that to a novice networker?
I’ve had comments suggesting remote access can be done by utilizing the “Relay” settings. No success there.

In the screenshot I already provided, I clicked the checkbox that said “Host Network.”

Bizarre.. I can’t find a page that looks like that.. Are there different versions for the various OS? Mine is Win11.

You can use a VPN such as Tailscale to connect back to your home network. However, this requires the remote client to run a VPN app, which may not be feasible for some devices.

Alternately, you can setup a proxy server on the Internet. The clients connect to the proxy server, which tunnels the connection back to your home network. This does not require any additional apps, etc. on the client. However, setup is more involved and you need to obtain your own domain name (easily done, but it costs a few dollars per year).

There are many guides available on the Internet, some use free services from Cloudflare, Oracle, or other hosting providers.

Here’s one guide I’ve seen referenced a few times. Never tried it, so no idea how well it does or does not work. It will give you an idea of the effort required. How to set up free, secure, high-quality remote access for Plex — mythofechelon

FYI, working around DNS Rebinding Protection is not a solution for remote access over CG-NAT network. CG-NAT is inherently incompatible with how Plex remote access works, as it does not support port forwarding. Hence the need for using a VPN, proxy host, etc.

As long as port forwarding can’t be configured on the TMobile gateway, it looks like those of us using their 5G network are out of luck. I keep checking there, as someone may figure out a workaround one of these days..

No.. I use Win11 to access my TrueNAS config. It’s in the app config settings.
