Plex remote setup on pfsense with PIA vpn setup

Server Version#: Version 1.29.2.6364

Hello all,

I am running Plex on Truenas scale. I’m trying to set up remote access and for the life of me i cannot get it to connect or stay connected. I am using pfsense with PIA VPN client installed on it so all traffic from the modem is being routed through the PIA VPN. i have port 32400 open and forwarded to the ip address of the truenas scale server. What am i missing is anyone willing to help me with this.

Get rid of the VPN on Plex. Trying to do remote access over a VPN is a known can of pain and does not really add to your security in a necessary way here.

im not understanding the PIA isn’t on plex app its on the pfsense box. i have it to protect the traffic of the whole house. to my knowledge it should work and there has to be a way to configure it properly.

Please take a read through these Remote Access and Troubleshooting Remote Access support pages.
Then step through this guide: The Basics of Remote Access Troubleshooting

In your case though, I think you need to setup (or fix) split tunneling on your VPN service for Plex. PIA seems to have information addressing this so hopefully you can follow their guides. Support likely needs to be from the PIA side and not the Plex side.

By split tunneling are you referring to routing specific host so that they do not pass through the PIA? If so I have that already set up I guess I would just need to add the host to the list.
