HDHomeRun Prime + Plex

Server Version#: 1.16.0.1226
Player Version#: Using Web Player

Hello,

I am mainly wondering if anybody has figured out how to get some channels from the HDHomeRun Prime to show in Plex. Appears that the Windows HDHomeRun app can play these channels, but they cannot be played in Plex. They are simply marked as “protected”.

Is there any thought on if this will come to Plex?

Thanks,

Michael

It will not. Plex will not decode DRM’d or encrypted streams. The HDHomerun app can decode because it is their hardware.

But since the Prime supports using cablecard hardware, wouldn’t that be handling the stream decryption? The app isn’t doing the decryption.

There’s a few things at play here.

The CableCARD is allowing you to play your cable channels. That’s the decryption the CableCARD performs.

On top of that, channels may be flagged with DRM (CCI Copy Once). This is what Plex does not support and really has nothing to do with the CableCARD. SiliconDust supports DRM channels in some of their apps, but that is for live viewing only, it still doesn’t support viewing recorded programs.

For now you’re out of luck viewing or recording these channels on Plex.
