I currently have Spectrum here outside of Austin TX and was not able to use Spectrum’s cable card with the tuning adapter with my HDHomeRun Prime and Plex due to channels being blocked. However, when I used Silicon Dust’s own live TV software, I was able to view all of the channels that were being blocked on Plex. Would this be an issue with Plex’s ability to display DRM’d shows? I would love to go back to using only Plex as I hate having a cable box for DVR capabilities.
Very likely it is a problem with DRM. You’ll need to call Spectrum to confirm. But you can also go into your HDHomeRun’s web interface and check the channel list. If it lists “DRM” next to the channel, that’ll mean it doesn’t work in Plex. (Let us know what you find!)
Paging @Audi-Veras since this has be useful information.
I’ll give it another try and see what I can get. I just found it quite odd that I could view everything on HDHomeRun’s software and not Plex.
Just do this:
That’s because SiliconDust’s software supports DRM decryption with HDHR Prime.
The technical support at silicondust told me this:
The HDHomeRun PRIME and PRIME 6 will work with both SDV and DRM-restricted channels, but Plex will not be able to playback DRM-restricted channels. This cannot change with a different model, as the DRM-restrictions are a legal requirement that we have to follow. Plex would need to be updated to support the type of DRM playback that CableCARD devices support to ever legally work with DRM-restricted US cable channels.
Our HDHomeRun app will playback live TV from DRM-restricted channels on Google-certified Android devices, Android TV, iPhones and iPads, Windows 10, and Xbox One. Our HDHomeRun DVR service does not currently record with DRM-restricted channels, but we are planning on adding that ability in the future, and hope to have it ready by the time the PRIME 6 is released.
Correct. It’s also a very expensive process to get CableCARD certified. And because Plex uses a server/client model, it’s also technically difficult for them to guarantee end-to-end encryption which is a huge requirement that must be met and “guaranteed”.
