Hi,
I’m thinking about buying a Nvidia Shield and have only just bought my first Sony Tv after a long time with LG so it’s all very confusing right now. My only question is if I connect my 8TB HDD to Shield with all of my media content I don’t have to format it to any special format? I can disconnect and update my HDD with new content with my laptop then plug it back into the USB to watch the media through Plex again without encuring any problems?
Also Plex on Nvidia Shield will passthrough DTS-HD without any problems as all of the Android TV apps don’t have the capacity?
Can’t speak to the HDD question.
Plex client on Shield TV will pass through dts, dts-HD, dts-HD MA, & dts:X w/o issue, as long as the connected device (receiver, TV, etc) supports the format. Same for Dolby Digital, DD+, TrueHD & Atmos. If the attached device does not support the format, the audio will be transcoded to a supported format.
If you are going to run Plex Media Server on the Shield TV, you should consider the Pro model with the 500GB drive. Plex stores some data on the internal storage space (database, chapter & video preview thumbnails, etc). The amount of data can exceed what is available on a 16GB model.
Suggest you read the docs:

Definitely read the Server Data Requirements section in Limitations When Running Plex Media Server on NVIDIA SHIELD
