No DTS-HD License?

I’ve been struggling with trying to get the native Nvidia Shield TV pro Plex app to play movies that utilize a DTS-HD audio track. What’s odd is I have no problems playing these tracks on the plex for Kodi app on my Nvidia Shield TV pro. A bunch of internet searching has lead me to the conclusion that Plex doesn’t have a DTS-HD license, but kodi does, which is why my plex for kodi app works fine. The problem is I find the native plex interface much better than the plex for kodi interface, so I’d like to be able to use it. Is this true that Plex doesn’t have a DTS-HD license thereby making it impossible to have passthrough DTS-HD audio?

Player Version#:9.2.3.32818

No, dts-hd and dts:x pass through just fine and has done for a long time. Must be a config setting.

That’s good to hear. However, I have spent hours adjusting the settings on the plex app and in my Nvidia Shield settings to get this to work with zero success. I believe I’ve tinkered with every possible setting. I’ve also tried reinstalls, cache clears, resets, hard resets, rolling back to different versions, trying beta versions, trying many different movies, and every other suggestion I’ve been able to find on plex and nvidia shield forums (it’s on these forums that I read about the license issue). What platform are you using to run plex if you don’t mind my asking? Because at this point I’m willing to just buy something else to make it work, but I was under the impression that aside from a desktop the Nvidia shield was the most versatile platform for this purpose.

What’s the Shield connected to?

An Onkyo AVR that is dts-hd capable. I tinkered with it’s settings a bit too but figured it wasn’t the problem since the plex for kodi dts-hd playback passed through it just fine. I’m also assuming the shield isn’t the problem for that same reason.

The Shield will passthrough DTS, DTS-HD MA, & DTS:X if supported by the attached AVR, soundbar, etc.

Does standard (lossy) DTS audio passthrough OK?

Configure the Plex app on the Shield for Passthrough = HDMI.

Leave the Shield audio settings at Auto. Don’t enable/disable individual codecs.

Then reset the HDMI interface so the Shield & Onkyo will perform the HDMI handshake:

  • Pull the HDMI cable between the Shield & Onkyo, wait a couple of seconds, and replace it.
  • Restart the Shield.
  • Power cycle the Onkyo.

Whichever is easiest (or something else). You just want to force the HDMI handshake.

Remember red/white/yellow composite cables? I never had to REBOOT A TV or chaperone a formal mixer for devices back in the good old days.

You kids, get off my lawn. Bah.

Thank you, this was very helpful. I had no idea an hdmi handshake was even a thing. It turns out the shield was somehow still “handshaked” with my display from a previous connection. My display is TrueHD capable but not DTS-HD capable, this caused the shield to think I was using a DTS-HD incapable device. Still confuses me that plex for kodi was able to work through that problem though. In any event, things are working exactly how I’d like them to now. Thank you very much for that
