HDHomeRun Dual for Plex DVR

The description for the list of supported devices says all HDHomeRun devices are supported, but the link only shows current models. Is the HDHomeRun Dual (HDHR3-US) supported? It’s an older model, and it’s not supported by SiliconDust’s HDHomeRun DVR, so I was wondering if it is supported by the Plex DVR.

I have the same unit, it was working for DVR until the latest update, now Plex says it found a TV Tuner (HDHomeRun Dual), but when I try to set it up, it just spins and spins, and trying to manually add it by IP fails.

No, the HDHR3-US is not supported. Sometime ago SiliconDust was offering an “upgrade” where you provided the serial number for your old HDHR3-US device(s) and they for a fraction of the cost of a new supported model, allowed you to upgrade. Interestingly enough, you still kept the older device (what good it did unless you ran a MSMC server which I do but wont be here soon with the Live TV implementation, well once Roku is supported IF it becomes supported for Live TV).

I never got the older non-“Connect” model (HDHR3-US) to work, unless I used “HDHR Viewer” plugin (or whatever the most current plugin is called anymore, if its still supported). And then, as it would suggest, was using a plugin, not an inherently built-in function of PMS.

I managed to get the HDHR3-US working, I had to open a range of firewall ports, but plex has detected it.

I have the HDHR3-us working? It does some odd stuff sometimes but when it manages a good recording it really looks good. I am going to get a new connect. I lke the implementation of the DVR still making changes to how I have it configured but so far so good even with a unsupported tuner card.

same here

several updates ago… like 1.5.x I seupt a really old HDHR-US with updated firmware and everything was fine until 1.7.2

now it shows the tuner as unavailable even though its working fine…

plex broke something here … clearly…

there are a multitude of posts on this now…

I had similar experience with my older HDHR3-us that had been collecting dust in the closet until I saw the DVR feature announcement. I had been using tablo happily for a couple years but this setup, if it works, would be far cleaner. and have fewer things to power and manage in the closet. I was able to detect and get channel listings for all my local broadcasters with no issues, then I set it to make a test recording off the PBS affiliate, and that worked and played fine. Once I knew that was working, I updated the Plex software to 1.7 (plexpass preview) and the HDHR firmware to 20161117. No joy. Find channels and happily schedules them, but then has a little uphappy error icon next to the thumbnail once the recording time is hit. I’m not even sure which log to look in, they’re so far buried in the filesystem.

How does this “HDHR trade-in” thing work?

BTW: KVM virtual machine running Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS, 1.5 GB RAM (yeah, I know), and 2x 1.8Ghz Core2 virtual processors with media stored on external iSCSI NAS.

Any devs going to weigh in on this or what

Just upgraded to Plex 1.7.6 tonight and was surprised to see that Plex recognized my HDHomeRun Dual (HDHR-US) that I still have on my network and had almost forgotten was there. I’ve just recorded a few fragments of TV shows to test it, but it seems to be working fine.

I had to remove the HDHR-US dual after updating past 1.5.x and update firmware again… it was updated about a year ago and evidently there was a new push… and since plex is the only thing I currently ping it with … it doesnt check firmware stutus…

After updating the frimware and re-adding the tuner… its back to normal

However plex needs to get

1 ). The recording container figured out and stop going back and forth

  1. clean up after itself… its leaving crap all over my transcode directory and creating a file that cant even be deleted by root or plex on my ubuntu plex machine where transcode is a SMB share location. Permissions on the folder are correct… I have to delete the files on the NAS directly as root.

I just signed up for a plex pass today, and I added my hdhr3-us and it works great with recording TV. I had trouble trying to watch live, but if I record first, it works fine.

hint: When setting up the DVR function in Plex Server with a HDHR3-US, make sure nothing else is accessing the HDHR3-US tuners during DVR setup.

wow glad i read this after buying one. its almost like the listing on plex’s website was misleading! no excuse for that. it is not that hard to put a list of supported hardware by model. stating “ALL HDHOMERUN!” isnt true as evidence by this post! i think i should contact their CS and demand them reimburse my ebay purchase.

Is there a trick to getting the HDHR3-US to work with Plex? When I do a channel scan, no channels are detected. I’ve been using the antenna with my Tivo Roamio OTA, so I know the connection is good, and the HDHomeRun setup found 36 channels.

Problem solved! It was the splitter I was using to go into the two tuner inputs on the HDHomeRun. It seems to work fine now.

i’ve got an hdhr3-us and it worked for me w/ plex w/o any special twiddling at all.

Would you mind sharing which firewall ports? If I turn off my firewall on my PMS, I can connect and use the HDHR3-US. If not, it can’t find it and refuses. Obviously I need to open up a few ports on the server running Plex, but I can’t figure out which.
