Hdhomerun issues

I have an hdhomerun and plex pass for dvr. The plex will stop recognizing the hdhomerun almost daily and I have to unplug it and plug it pack in to get it to find it again. The hdhomerun is still connected to the network as I can use it in other apps. I have deleted the dvr and reinstalled, but it is still an issue. Is it a network problem, plex problem or hdhomerun problem?

It is hard to say without more information. Would you please post debug level Plex logs?

Edit: Please verify that in Plex Web, under Settings -> General, that you have “Enable Plex Media Server Debug Logging” checked, and “Enable Plex Media Server Verbose Logging” unchecked. If you have to modify either of these, then please wait until after the problem occurs again to download and post logs. Verbose will cause it to log so much information that it will only show a small time window. Not having Debug typically results in not enough info.

I do not have those options under settings

I think it is just that you don’t have “Show Advanced” selected. Let’s try this:

  1. Log into Plex web by going to “app.plex.tv” in a web browser and logging in.
  2. In the upper right click on the Settings icon (image )
  3. In the menu on the left, under Settings click on “General”

  4. If the “Show Advanced” button (image ) is in the upper right then click on it, and it should change to “Hide Advanced”.
  5. Scroll down and check that debug logging is checked, and verbose logging is unchecked. Click “Save Changes” if you have to change either.

I have a similar problem with my HDHomerun Extend. I have discovered that when viewing a channel through Plex it won’t release the tuner channel when you close the player window. (you check this by logging into the HDHomerun Tuner Status page) This means the tuner channels are in use despite not being viewed in Plex anymore and therefore the HDHomerun won’t be recognizable as having any tuners that are connectable giving the connection error. Since there is no apparent way to do a soft reset of the HDHomerun I have to unplug to break the connection.

Before you close the overall player application, are you actually closing the stream in the player by clicking the “x” on the stream? My experience has been that if you close the stream first then it releases the tuner. If you just close the player without first closing the stream then it does hang onto the tuner.

At one time in the past it would eventually close the tuner for me according to a timeout (something like 30 minutes) - I’m running a test right now to see if that is still the case.

Edit: In my test I was streaming Live TV through PMP, and closed the PMP app without first closing the stream. It hung onto the tuner (and Plex session in Dashboard) for 3 minutes, then closed the session and released the tuner.

You can reset the HDHomerun without unplugging it. The XXXXXXX is the ID of your tuner.

"C:\Program Files\Silicondust\HDHomeRun\hdhomerun_config.exe" XXXXXXXX set /sys/restart self

It does not settle the root problem of why the tuner is not being released, but should help you with the reset.

It does it once every few days. Seemingly random. I can use the hdhomerun with other apps so I know its not an issue with the unit itself.
