HDHOMERUN Premium TV stuttering/buffering

I checked my recordings after reading this thread and saw I started having this issue on Sunday with my duo. I have rebooted everything and will test again. I did make some changes over the weekend to make the external guide work. I’ve been on the latest plex version for a couple of weeks now, so the version would not seem to be an issue.

I noticed @david.scott.day_gmail.com indicated he wasn’t having any issues. He has an i7 8700X, 40GB ram. I have a pretty weak processor at the moment (AMD phenom II X945 with a passmark around 3500 w/8gb ram). Although CPU/memory looks fine, could that play a role? Maybe those of us experiencing issues have slightly weaker processors? Just a thought, grasping at straws here. My players impacted are a windows 10 i7 laptop all android fire tvs and fire sticks.

I don’t believe thats what’s contributing to the issue. Since it also plays the OTA channels fine. There is another thread where more people are having the same issue.

well this is annoying to say the least. I suppose I’ll cancel the monthly premium subscription until its resolved. I’m not leaving Plex, too heavily tied to it. Will just wait until its sorted out and go back to saving money until the viewing of premium channels its stable. Thanks for getting this some attention!

Yeah i’m too invested in Plex as well. I just installed EMBY to confirm if it works or not on the same hardware. Hopefully we get a fix soon.

I also noticed that if I record an OTA HD channel, it plays back normally. If however, I record one of the streaming channels, I still get the stuttering when I play back just as it does during live viewing.

I actually saw a “weak signal” message on a Premium TV channel — so, maybe Plex isn’t detecting enough bits fast enough?

I’ll throw my two cents in. I signed up this weekend for the premium service and have only stuttering playback though Plex. 100% fine through hdhomerun app on Android TV, iOS and Mac. Running PMS on an 8 core Xeon server on centos 7. No HW transcoding… Transcoding issue seems like most likely cause but no proof. OTA works beautifully here too.

Do you have HW transcoding @david.scott.day_gmail.com?

I am also having trouble with choppy play of the hdhomerun premium channels (extend + shield). Whether recorded or live viewing through plex, the playback stutters. Live viewing of the feed direct from the HDHomerun is great, only a problem through plex. I’ve tried altering the transcoding profile for the plex server, but haven’t had any luck. OTA channels don’t seem to be affected and still work well.

For me, everything was working fine with Plex/hdhr extend/premium the channels up until about 3 days ago. Suddenly the premium channels have started stuttering in all of my clients, both live and recorded.

I have confirmed in Emby, as well as ChannelsDVR trial, and HDHR app everything is fine. I even went so far as to rolleback my Plex server (running in docker on unraid) to a previous version with NO luck.

The only change that was made was trying to use the awesome work done by forum members to leverage a pythonf script to grab guide data. My next step is to try setting up premium channels using the Gracenote guide. I do not think this will have any effect whatsoever as this is nothing more than guide data, but who knows.

I am def interested in a solution to this as right now I have disabled DVR shceduling through Plex and am using the HDHR DVR to schedule my recordings. Hdhrdvr bites, but is at least functional with premium the. :-/

I wouldn’t bother. I’m using the default Plex guide with the Premium TV service and see the same stuttering as being reported.

I haven’t wandered over to the SD forums as of yet – has anyone mentioned this apparently Plex-specific issue over there?

Wow, long time @darcilicious! Thats a real bummer. Thanks for the heads up and I guess I won’t waste my time.

There is a thread over there talking about it, but it’s probably just us. Someone with SD just posted in asking about it though. There were some notes in another thread about changes to the encoding to try to improve picture quality. If there is an issue with Plex being able to record because of the stream encoding it will be a quite a while before Plex officially supports it - well or even can support it. It was nice for a few days.

Thanks for that. Just to clarify, the issue is for both live viewing and recording.

Guess it’s back to Channels for me, where it ALL just works, guide, viewing and recording :stuck_out_tongue:

@darcilicious - Channels DVR?

Yeah. With Channels DVR, the app is free and the first month of “service” is free, after which it’s $8/mo. Since you have to fork over $$ for the PremiumTV service in any case, I thought I’d give it a try.

I have to say that on the AppleTV, tuning is teh speedy  but I can’t get the Web player to work on my macOS box and Chrome.

@darcilicious - Does channels handle the the whole National, Eastern, Pacific guide data thing that HDHR Premium has going on? Also which guide data did you choose? your local cable companies and then manually mapped all of your channels?

I have the HDHR Quattro and am having issues with stuttering and sync just watching the OTA channels (using the 5339 server on Linux). I’m having a myriad of other issues with this setup as well, including LOTS of problems just getting my Android TV app to connect and stream a movie. It’s complaining about lack of bandwidth and a variety of other things (including saying that it can’t connect at all).

Seems to me that there’s an issue with this server build that’s causing these issues in a variety of places and areas, and I’m going to seek out the prior version of the server to see if the problems go away.

Using the HDHR app on the TV and any device shows ZERO issues with stuttering, sync, pixelization, or anything else.

I’m not sure what you mean by “this server” build (version number?) Over the weekend, folks have reported not making any changes to their set up; the streaming channels were working earlier and then the stuttering began without changing anything.

I know that personally, I haven’t updated my server for at least two weeks.
