HDHOMERUN Premium TV

SiliconDust released a new firmware for their hardware that allowed their soon to be release feature Premium TV. Its a $35 a month subscriptions that allows you to stream certain cable channels. Like Directv now but cheaper.

Right now they have those shows as demos. They show up as AVC HD which I read in other places that plex doesn’t play. I just know that plex wont show those stations. Even though plex can see my 92 stations it only shows the OTA ones.

There are reports to the contrary.

What is your source?

That is incorrect  Currently it takes some manual intervention but it does work.

This working great on Plex Instead of OTA when I added my Quatro I selected cable and it mapped the channels correctly it even records.

Do you have a subscription? I can’t get the demo channels to show up on Plex.

Try selecting cable instead of antenna and then rescan.

The plex forum I found talking about AVCHD .m2 files were not the right area to look.

I tried the database editing with no avail. I had the same issue a reddit user had in the comment.

I tried changing it to cable and scanning, in plex, and it couldn’t find any stations. I will keep working on it. I am sure I am doing something wrong. I have a plex membership but not a hdhomerun membership. I am also using am EXTEND version of homerun. Let me try disabling transoding in the hdhomerun.

you need to pay for the sub…then associate the sub to your hdhomerun

Then you need to reboot your hdhomerun - for me this got it to show up the channels as real and not demo - i use this script
“c:\Program Files\Silicondust\HDHomeRun\hdhomerun_config.exe” 10324a85 set /sys/restart self

Relace the hdhomerun name with yours

I had one of my hdhomeruns revert back to demo so there is some kinks still

This feature suggestion is still important because Plex needs to build out a special antenna category for this so that the shows are listed correctly - you can use cable but its entirely manual matching…and some of my antenna tag along channels dont exist on cable

The demo channels should show up just fine you don’t have to pay for the subscription to try it out. See video in the link to the post above. He shows how it’s working with just the demo channels but you do have to scan for cable I believe (you can check to see if it’s working in HD homerun app)…

Well I tried everything and I just cant get it to work. Like the forum category I am in, I just hope they will make it a feature soon.

Try this Video … The only channels I had to map were the OTA.

The problem I seem to have is plex wont find those extra channels. The HDHR app plays them and the device shows them. Plex just wont show them. I’ll play around more with that knowledge.

I have the HDTC-2US , maybe my hardware is too old.

It has to be a connect or quatro.

It 100% works…but will be a hot mess until plex adds custom support for this product as the ordering is all over the place - by default also it found the non hd versions of the channels and i had to hand move all of them to hd

Recording also seems to work fine…they come in as if they are over the air channels with the same .ts stream and subtitle style

Not sure it is all that cheaper. The most basic package for DirecTV Now is $40 per month for about 65 channels. Yes, HDHomeRun’s is cheaper at $35 per month, but you also get 20 channels less.

It does provide 4 concurrent streams vs. DirectTV Now’s 2, which is a good plus.

And you get (in my case) 62 channels all together with over the air antenna - which is how this should be used

The best part is you get actual control over your signal and can make easy recordings and streamings of the content

If i had a proper antenna it would be 75 channels though a handful would be repeats

Two of the ninjas tested this and noticed that

  • The channel numbers are the same as those used in the Comcast National Channel lineup. This may hint at the source of the streams.
  • Bitrates vary between 2 - 4 mbps (720p, H.264) “It looks terrible on a 4K screen”. Might be enough to forward it to your tablet or phone, though.

In my case it is around 70. However, some of those have poor quality signals.
The amount of total ‘available’ and ‘usable’ channels will vary wildly from person to person.
Also consider that the money you are paying HDHomerun is for those 45 channels since the rest you get for free (without having to pay them anything beyond the initial purchase price of the tuner).

Hey, I’m not advocating for buying DirecTV Now, or Sling or any other service. I’m just pointing out that the price differences are not all that great.

Hdhomerun says they are working on the bitrates - they want these streams to be as high quality as possible from the source material - I think they are on the very low side right now for launch load

Well at least i hope this is the truth because i won’t pay long at this quality…it is dreadful

I am using a HDHOMERUN QUATRO and deleted the tuner but selecting cable and running a scan doesnt show any channels. Even restarted PLEX to see if it will work but same results.
