HDHOMERUN Premium TV

This would help people that live in an area where most cable channels are DRM and they would like to be able to record them or view them remotely using Plex.

I went back to my Connect and it still wont show those channels. Maybe I must use a Connect Duo or Connect Quatro??

You have to delete the DVR and set it up again using Cable instead of Antenna.

Yes, Extend, Duo, or Quatro will work.

Also the video posted above shows you step by step exactly what you need to do, assuming you have already updated the HDHomeRun via https://my.hdhomerun.com/

Anybody trying to set this up you have to be subscribed to Silicondust Premium TV before even trying it … it will not work unless you are subscribed. Will not work with Demo channels.

Can you record directv with Plex?

Yes you can.

Could you point me in the right direction? Everything I’ve found says not possible, stream only.

Apologies, I missed the part about DIRECTV, I thought you were talking about premier TV from HD homerun. So no, you cannot use Plex to record DIRECTV. However DIRECTV NOW does offer cloud-based DVR.

P.S. Why are you asking about DIRECTV in a thread about HD homerun premium TV??

Did you power off HDHomeRun? Some had to do that

I don’t know. But I’d say it is a safe bet that you cannot.

Don’t forget it will be only available in the U.S. (and Canada, later).

I’m not a fan of the threading on this forum, i was trying to reply with the above comment saying directv was better, my point being you can’t record it with plex how is that ā€˜better’. must have tapped the wrong thing on my ipad.

I don’t think anyone was saying DirecTV is better (or worse for that matter).

As for me, I was only stating the HDHomerun Premium service at $35 is not that much cheaper vs DirecTV Now’s $40.
Nothing more, nothing less.

@OttoKerner:
What I’d really like to know is if Plex is considering the possibility of litigation from content creators, distributors, or copyright holders because of the way Plex records TV Shows and Movies.
I believe cable and satellite providers go out of their way to make sure consumers cannot extract the digital files from their set-top DVRs.

Are there any concerns over at Plex about this?

I cannot give an official statement on behalf of the company. Here is my opinion though:

Plex is recording only unencrypted content.
If a device outside of Plex is decrypting the stream, this is hardly Plex’s fault.
It is Silicon Dust who are breaking the ā€˜secure chain’ by

  • providing a device (Hdhomerun Prime) which decrypts the content and relays it in unencrypted form to any device in your home
  • offering a subscription service which gives you access to unencrypted content.

When reading the Silicon Dust website carefully, they mention ā€˜Hdhomerun Premium DRM’ coming soon.
I don’t know what that is referring to, but it may hint at that they will be locking down access to premium content with DRM and thus remove the ability to use just about any software to watch/record the stream.
Which would also prevent the ability of Plex to record/stream these premium/subscription streams, unfortunately.

Where did you get that Idea about DRM from … that is not what it states can you point to where it states that ? They are working on being able to record Premium DRM using Cable Card with their APP. The channels they offer on Premium TV are all DRM free on my Cable Service.

Hence why I wrote:

I might have interpreted that wrong, though and it actually refers only to their DVR service.

Still, I wonder just like @earratia how long it’s gonna take for content owners to demand from Silicon Dust to close that loop hole.

Doesn’t TiVo allow you to record cable channels as well? Wouldn’t the same loophole apply to them?

@OttoKerner okay so i’m confused why people are having issues or think the other foot is about to drop. Hdhomerun is broadcasting these channels in exactly the same way that cable companies do. Outside of some garbage cable companies like Cox, these channels are decrypted by cable card and then are copy freely - just like these channels. I can find no reference to Hdhomerun Premium DRM but if such a thing exists it would be to allow hdhomerun to offer drm channels (copy once) like hbo and showtime. Their android and windows apps support recording and playback of these channels so that makes sense. With what plex does (reencoding) it is probably a pipe dream for it to ever be cable labs certified.

There is no loop hole…this is the same way their channels are treated on cable - hats off to hdhomerun and the channels they worked with for getting something like this setup - now lets hope they quickly get the quality up and we have some sort of custom mapping with half the channels being east coast and half being west coast

And also, even if somehow hdhomerun is doing something wrong, how on earth would plex get in trouble- they are recording shows exactly in accordance with the laws that have existed since the 80’s

EDIT: now i see the drm was referring to their cable card decrypt - yep its good that one company after Microsoft has taken up that cause
