Live TV Buffering on Apple TV 4k w/ Synology DS916+ and HDHomeRun Extend

Really struggling to understand why I’m having such issues with live tv via Plex. I don’t usually make it five minutes into any broadcast with some sort of buffering or complete freeze of the frame.

I have an Synology DS916+ with 8GB, and HDHomeRun Extend that is transcoding with the setting at “Heavy.” Within Plex I have played with the settings a bit, but honestly none of the transcode settings have affected the viewability of a live tv stream.

I was hoping that “Original Format” would avoid additional transcoding from Plex. But it doesn’t seem to be the case unless I am misunderstanding. And running at “Highest Quality” right now, as that 1080 would be my preference vs. 540p or below.

What am I doing wrong here? Everything is wired on to my network with gigabit router / switch. So bandwidth shouldn’t be an issue. As for Plex I am running version 1.9.4.4325.

I was so excited I paid for the Lifetime Plex Pass, but now it seems like it may go to waste.

Help!
Dennis

having similar issues with similar set up - HDHomeRun Extend - Live TV turns off after 5-10 mins on Apple TV 4K and Apple TV 4 - also recordings seem to shut cut out after 5-10 mins for 30 min shows and 15-30 mins for hour long shows. I recorded 2 one hour long show when I first got the set up about 3 weeks ago, but haven’t had any shows record all the way through since. Following this post in hopes of a solution.

Thanks.
Kevin

Bumping…

I can say that I purchased Channels last night on my Apple TV. I was surprised at just how well it works compared to the Live TV functionality with Plex.

I experienced no issues buffering, watched multiple channels for testing over the course of 3-4 hours and not one hiccup. So I wonder if it really has to do with the Plex settings, or issues with the additional transcoding it was doing.

Channels sounds good for live tv but that doesn’t solve my problem with dvred shows. I rarely watch live. There was a Plex server update last night so I’ll see if that fixes some things with recordings this week.

Dennis I have the exact same setup you have. Check you the thread I started:

Thanks for sharing, looks like you have been unable to resolve Live TV as well.

Any luck?

I too am having buffering issues. Seems like it is worse with true HD tv compared to those stations that shows old shows before HD. But all stations are having the issue, some worse than others.
My Synology NAS CPU is running at 90+% with Plex consuming 60+% so hoping that it’s not because my NAS can’t handle the transcoding. Anyway to optimize the Live TV?
