Hi I’m a bit confused here and was hoping someone could help me out. If I was to buy the HDHomeRun HR5 4DT and being a PlexPass user would my kids be able to watch and record tv through their PS4’s in their rooms or would I have to buy them each another HDHomeRun in order for them to watch and record their own programs. Also if I did that would they have to pay a subscription fee each month because they don’t have a Plex Pass. I run my Plex through my Synology Nas.
Hope you can make out what I’m after. Thanks in advance guys

They would be able to watch live TV.
They would be able to watch the recorded TV broadcasts on your server.

But they won’t be able to schedule recordings, because this is only possible with the server owner’s user account.

Thanks OttoKerner for the quick reply. Would you recommend buying the HDHomeRun as a way of canceling the cable bill.

I can recommend these tuners.

I cannot give any advice about cutting the cord, because I have no experience whatsoever with these kind of companies. Judging by the reports of users here and elsewhere, the cable companies will fight tooth and nails to keep you in their grip. For instance by bundling their offerings in a cunning way, so you won’t be able to get decent internet connectivity without also paying for some cable service or other shenanigans…

This not a question that anyone other than you (and your family) can answer.

The two main considerations are:

  1. what do you watch now that you can’t live without?
  2. what can you watch from an antenna and will that be enough?

Are you close enough to receive OTA broadcasts reliably? If so, I strongly recommend using the HDHomerun and Plex for live TV and DVR and ditch cable TV.

When you say close enough, do you mean to my router? My router is in the downstairs cupboard but I have Ethernet ports in each room. I was looking at the HDHomeRun it looks great. I have a Synology which I run Plex on but I also have a Nividia Sheild which I use for the Livingroom. What extra Channels do you get if you pay the subscription? Is it worth paying the subscription in your opinion. Thanks
