If I plug my verizon cable to HDHomerun, will I be able to watch all channels its offers?

I just upgraded to Samsung SmartTV and only reason for me to keep the cable box around is to watch Nick Jr and other content (Food Network, Cooking channel etc). I doubt this solution will work but wanted to check here first that instead of cable box, if I directly plug the verizon cable in HDHomeRun, will I be able to view live TV that way?

if not, any one have tried other way to get Nick Jr content on Samsung Smart TV (2016 mode with Tizen OS)?

You would need a HDHR Prime and a cable card (provided by the cable company).
It will not work with a HDHR Connect or Extend.

@rsava - Thank you for quick response. This does solve my issue of watching cable TV subscription.

Do you know if the Plex app on Samsung TV with Tizen OS, support Live TV?

Not sure how that solves your cable TV subscription, you will probably still be paying for cable.

No, the only apps that support live TV are iOS devices (iPhone, iPad - NOT Apple TV) and Android TV (NOT Android apps).
Other apps are coming, no there is no timeline as Plex does not give timelines for development.

I have hdhomerun prime with Verizon fios cable. I can get all channels with exception of fox channels, big ten network, and national geo because they are encrypted. The local fox affiliate comes (ch 5) in so really only missing the fox business channel. I ditched the cable box.

That said, there seems to be a bug in PMS 1.7 that preventing me from streaming live tv, but other apps let me while plex fixes the bug.

@abarbaccia - But you’re still paying for cable, right? You just got rid of the rental fee of the box?

Yes that’s right. But also the terrible remote, lack of cec support, and terrible guide / interface

@rsava - yes, ideal would be to get rid of cable TV subscription but some channels like Nick Jr, Food Network, Cooking Channel dont provide subscription options directly. so in order to have access to that content, i need to have subscription (for which I pay $12/month to verizon). The live TV on plex will help me get rid of box rental ($12/month to $5/month for cable card) and give access to content via their apps. I will also be able to record the shows for channels that dont have apps. This is not ideal but compromise on my needs.

But with you saying, I can’t access live TV on Apple TV app changes things up. I will have to rethink how I can configure devices to suit my needs.

I have FIOS Local Channels only. I have an HDHomerunConnect and I get all my local channels clear over the coax. Works great and no fooling with an antenna. The trick was going to the local ip for the Connect and changing it from Antenna to Cable. Prior to doing that I got nothing from the cable wire.

I have FiOS as well. I just got the HDHomeRun Prime hooked up today, and it was relatively painless to swap the CableCARD out of my (retiring) TiVo Premiere XL and have Verizon re-pair to my HDHomeRun Prime. As mentioned, some channels will not work…namely those channels that have CCI Byte set to “Copy Once”…HBOs, Cinemax, and all Fox owned channels like Fox News, FX, and National Geographic. Those will not be available via HDHomeRun. Good news is that some Premium channels like Starz, Showtime, and Epix DO NOT have the CCI byte set to “Copy Once”, and so will still work fine with the HDHomeRun Prime.

Until Plex gets more client apps going, I found “InstaTV”for free in the Apple App Store for my ATV4. Seems to work great for Live-TV for the available channels. Guide leaves a bit to be desired, but it works.

Still keeping my TiVo eco-system in place until folks get all the kinks worked out of this setup… I need to be able to watch Fox News and FX at minimum. "Copy Once”needs to mean "Copy Once”and not preclude viewing/recording with the HDHomeRun. And this is different from encrypted. Almost ALL the channels (except locals) are encrypted and require an authorized CableCARD to decrypt them for viewing. This is Content Protection beyond that, and (IMHO) should be treated the same way the TiVo treats it…one copy can be recorded, and you can stream it wherever you want within your home. The client app/device should be made to enforce the Content Protection as necessary. (I.e., you can stream your LIve-TV or “copy once”recording to any DHCP compliant device/app in your home…just like TiVo can stream to a TiVo Mini, iOS, App, or Android app.)

@barryguzik - Have you looked at Channels for the ATV? I know it is $25 but the channel guide is first rate. IMHO, worth the $25 for the WAF.

Haven’t look at this yet. IMHO, $25 is a bit steep to spend on something that (in theory) will become obsolete if/when Plex adds clients and some sort of DTCP-IP implementation…especially when I already have 2 TiVos and a TiVo Mini + one (now retired) TiVo Premiere XL (all with Lifetime subscription). I got the HDHomeRun Prime for like $90 (with the Plex Discount code) which seemed reasonable for experimenting to see where we are with the Tech at this point. If we never get to the point where Plex/HDHomeRun can (mostly) transparently replace a TiVo eco-system, then I’m only out $90, which IMHO is a small price to pay to evaluate…we’ll see where it goes… I can’t say for sure, but I’m very much hoping that everybody making this effort understands that the competition is to beat, (or at least to equal), is the existing STB/DVR product paradigm…but at a more cost-effective price-point. If this can happen, then a Plex Pass sub + $90 for a tuner box is a GREAT buy-in price point. However, there are several areas that need vast improvement in order for that to happen: Content Protection, Client/App Ubiquity, Program Guide UI navigation, and Program Guide content. Hopefully there is a well thought out plan/strategy in place to address these. If not, we won’t ever “graduate” beyond Science Project. But hey, I’m a geek and I LIKE working with “Science Projects” in Tech…hahaha.
