HDHomeRunConnect and Interlacing Problem

I’m running Plex DVR beta 4, on MacOS 10.12.2, with an HD Home Run Extend, which I have set to transcode at highest quality, and process video while recording. Sources that are 1080i, when played back, are done so as 1080p and exhibit terrible interlacing artifacts.

I can change transcoding to a lower setting (like High Quality 30 FPS) but that actually transcodes to 720p. Which brings up another issue; that should be labelled as such, since the other options indicate what the final format will be.

Anywho, this mismatch is a problem.

I too have been running into really bad interlacing artifacts. I recently upgraded to Beta 4 and also upgraded the HDHomeRun firmware. Since then I recorded 2 shows and have not seen the interlacing. I’m going to be recording the show where the quality has been worst tomorrow and will let you know if it’s any better.

What firmware is the HDHomeRun using?

Probing for devices:

1 device(s) found

10549D79(hdhomeruntc_atsc) is already running the latest firmware

It’s definitely related to recording shows where the source is interlaced.

I just download the “Channels” app for Apple TV 4 (which by the way has a gorgeous grid view, live viewing and time shift), and it uses the raw stream from the HDHomeRun, which the Apple TV then hardware decodes. There is no problem with deinterlacing using this method, which leads me to believe that there’s a deinterlacing issue with Plex on playback.

It turns out that upgrading the firmware (and DVR to Beta 4) did NOT fix the problem. It seems like everything recorded at 1080 is interlaced, as per the info you pasted above. For me, the shows recorded at 720p look better. What is strange is that all of the shows I record at 1080p show a scan type of Interlaced.

Is there a way to find out if the source is interlaced? Is this an issue with the HDHomeRun? Or is it certain channels?

Finally, one issue I’m having is that I can’t find what channel a show was recorded on, so it’s hard to go and look at whether other shows on that channel have the same issue. When I look at what I think is the channel I recorded from in the HDHomeRunView app, I am not seeing the very visible interlace artifacts that I’m seeing for the recorded shows.

Does it look the same if you turn off the processing on the HDHomeRun and record to a .ts file? What about if you do any post processing?

Is the file for the Today show really only 227MB that seems really small unless that is only a minute or so long?

Keithus - how do you turn off processing and record to a .ts file? I had mine set for highest quality and was going to try it as “Original Format”. I also have “Process Video While Recording” checked.

Original Format will result in a .ts file.

Thanks godrifle. I’m going to try that and see if it helps.

I’m having the same problem with the latest version of Plex and my HDHomerun Quatro. Hopefully there is a fix 2 years later??
