HDR Playback Works....... Sometimes

I have been trying out HDR playback in different environments and have noticed some things work and some don’t:

Vizio (P and M series)- Playback works as long as subtitles are off. the moment subtitles get turned on it does not detect the HDR stream and lowers playback to 1920x1038. If subtitles are disabled, playback jumps to 4K HDR and plays smoothly.

Samsung TV- This gave me some of the most frustration, it seemed like it wanted to work but never would. The screen would glitch out every few seconds but for the few moments it played back smoothly, HDR seemed intact, never got around to testing subtitles because it would not even work without them.

Xbox One X- It looks like HDR support here is lacking. Playback in 1920x1038 when set on “original”. Playback is smooth but resolution is not 4k and HDR is not recognized it seems here either.

iPhone X- I assume the app is not optimized to support HDR. Playback looked muted and like it was not picking up the HDR. Hopefully this is in the works, but overall I am (personally) less concerned about getting 4k HDR playback on a 5" screen.

I will do some testing with a Shield, a 4k apple tv, an LG tv, and probably a Sony as well. I have seen some good things online about Shield playback so I am hopeful there. Looking forward to HDR optimization on all able platforms!!

The HDR support only make sense on devices/Tv that supports HDR.

Regarding the subtitles and buffering issue, its discussed here:

Absolutely, this is what I am referring to above (every device tested plays HDR). I was simply giving a list of attempted (and successful) platforms as I had not seen much information or testing posted here regarding HDR playback. Thanks for the other link

Our transcoder is currently limited to 1080p for output, so anytime the video has to be transcoded, you will only get 1080p. This also losses the HDR information. To get 4k, you need to be able to direct play the file.

Vizio (P and M series)- Playback works as long as subtitles are off.

I’m not sure if the Vizio TV’s can overlay subttiles, if not they need to be transcoded into the video. Check the app for a subtitle setting. If there is one, set it to “image formats only”.

Samsung TV- This gave me some of the most frustration, it seemed like it wanted to work but never would.

Which Plex app version are you running?

The app supports 4k HEVC in MP4 container. 4k h264 doesn’t work for some reason.

I will check on the Vizio subtitles setting later today, thanks!

I am not sure on the app version and can get that later today as well, I will say I had just installed the app on the tv that day to run the test so unless there is a more recent version than the one on the samsung app store, it was the current version.

Xbox, thats annoying it is just mp4… does HEVC mkv not work (I am assuming not haha)
