HDR tone mapping not working?

Server Version#:latest?
Player Version#:latest?

If there’s a log to look for, please direct me…otherwise.

I’ve been with Plex for quite some time, and throughout the years, I kept an unintentionally diverse selection of media types/sizes…

The point is, I don’t complain on forums, don’t know the standards, don’t know what info you want, and never post…

Why do the HDR movies look weird on my non HDR TV? The tone mapping is checked.

I know I’ll have an HDR TV soon, so I obviously don’t want to get rid of the media…

Yes, I force transcode to ensure the HDR to SDR mapping, to no avail…

I have a CUDA capable card, otherwise my overclocked 5800X can handle it. There’s no reason for it to display purple faces on my crap 55" Sharp TV that can’t even spell HDR…

What am I doing wrong? Or more importantly, where do I look to find out?

Please define “weird” ? Are you trying to play HEVC HDR DV titles ?
There are certain titles which will go “color wonky” when transcoded. These are Dolby Vision profile 5. DV profile 5 does not have a fallback HDR layer in the stream. and the transcoder doesn’t yet support that pure DV profile. It’s being discussed but not an easy problem to solve.

can you show me the XML for one of those files?

(Get Info → View XML) from the top down to </media> tag

Thank you, I apologize for the delay in my response. Here is the XML data for one of the movies:

Let me know if you would like me to paste it in a different way.

Thank you for any assistance you can offer.

EDIT: Also, when I say weird, yes I just mean the colors. I’m red-green colorblind, so if you ask me what colors look weird, I might not be able to answer very well…

Also, is it the GPU that is required to convert it properly? I just replaced my 980TI with an AMD card…and I believe I have the drivers set correctly. But I’m not going to lie, I don’t know what I’m doing…Might just have to go buy an HDR tv right now :-). Anyway, thanks again.

UPDATE: So I can’t recall the method I was using to play these files when I first made this post, but right now I was just using the Chromecast (converting it to 1080p, because I don’t have the new one).

I switched the player to be my HTPC running OpenElec. The tone mapping now works.

The player actually matters? Is it transcoding the wrong way on the Chromecast?

I’m so confused, is there somewhere I can research this stuff so I don’t have to ask anyone?

I apologize for my ignorance.

After a reboot of my server, it’s back to playing in weird colors.

What is going on? There’s something stupid I’m missing, I know it.

Rebooting the server should not change how playback happens.

I’m going to need some DEBUG log files which capture the start of the playback please.

Wow ok, other than searching for the file it’s playing, is there a ‘tag’ I should look for that would help you? I can send you the whole log, but there’s a lot that isn’t pertinent.

Do you know how I should narrow it down?

EDIT: Also, I guess it wasn’t just a reboot…I did update Plex, and maybe a couple other things, if that helps.

Forget it for now, I’m going to reformat my server tomorrow and start over with everything. I’ll let you know if the same problem exists, and I’ll be more organized with regards to the logs etc.

Thank you.

what I need to see is the DEBUG sequence from the time the PLAY button is pressed until the playback fails / is stopped.

It’s usually easiest to download the zip and attach it.

So it looks like there’s some info in there that I don’t really want to put on a public forum? My public IP, username, even private mapped IP, public port I use etc…Is there a way to get this to you privately? Or am I just being paranoid?
