HEIC/HEIF support in photo libraries (new photo format for iPhones)

I concur re: multi-factor authentication, though I wouldn’t want to enter a discussion of its relative priority in the grand scheme of things … I theorize it depends largely on your viewpoint, based on what you’re using the product for/the sensitivity of your data.

I think we’d have to see the history of what has been done in comparison to customer requests to produce hard evidence of what the developers are doing or not doing. I’m not sure it’s relevant to my point, though. If there are 100 people in a room with the developers and 99 of them are yelling for something else, the odd person out isn’t likely to see any action. Now, if someone can show us evidence that the Plex developers are listening to the 1 and ignoring the 99, there’s probably a legitimate beef against developer work processes … but it doesn’t change the fact that only 151 (current number) people have asked for HEIC/HEIF. As you point out … if anyone has a legitimate gripe, it’s the community calling for multi-factor auth. They’ve made their voice loud and clear. The HEIC/HEIF community has not.

Just decided to use Plex to archive older photos and reduce my iCloud photo storage usage - disappointing that HEIC is still not supported being that it’s becoming more and more prevalent since iOS first started using it years ago and now Android has given the option - the space savings from it are great but we need support for it in Plex! I don’t relish the idea of having to convert all my HEIC’s to JPG and balloon the amount of space taken on my UNRAID server that houses Plex and my media.

Come on, for me the Photo Upload on iPhone is even broken. Photos are being uploaded as .mov or .plist. I think it is connected to the non support of the HEVC/HEIC formats.

Plex: why not use https://github.com/strukturag/libheif to decode/encode the images in the transcoder?

One of the more annoying things is the English language. The word ‘soon’ really set up hopes within a timeline manner.

This post was Jun 13, 2017, today is Aug 31, 2020 which is 1176 days have passed. We are also coming up on iOS 14 release.

Soon was a really poor choice of words if you’re friend said he’ll be at the restaurant soon for dinner that makes sense.

I had not messed with HEIC format and I didn’t know my wife was using it. Took me a bit of time to try and figure out why photos were not showing up in Plex.

Please go back and update the page and just say we really dont give 2 sh$% and we will maybe never get to it. I would respect the honestly a hell of a lot more.

Rest assured, we are working on enabling support for HEIF in Plex as soon as possible.

Since HEIC support is still not there… What ARE you guys using to manage your photos? I have everything organized with Lightroom on my NAS. However: Plex only shows parts (due to missing HEIC format) and sharing with friends&family is a pain.

I have a google account and can sync the Lightroom directories there however Google Photos API is quite limited.

I could use Microsoft Onedrive but I have > 1 TB photos. My E3 account gives me 5TB BUT Onedrive for Business has no Photos section and all photo managing capabilities is limited to OneDrive (not Business).

I looked for decent software to run on my server but nothing I found was good enough or wife-compatible. I am running out of options if plex is not turning around suddenly and add HEIC support…

Would like to hear how you guys handle it.

C’mon Plex. There has been only one new feature for photos this year: the WebP format support. Photos needs more love.

it’s been over 3 years since the original request was made and now all phones support HEIC by default. Plex Photo management is becoming more useless everyday this remains an outstanding issue.
