Sorry, we don’t/
No worries. Thank you for being as transparent as possible. Hope you guys can burn through your other priorities quickly, get to HEIC and other support issues we would all like to see in Plex.
Seems Emby is going to add this soon. Would be great if you guys can prioritize this too.
Just putting my vote out there as a lifetime subscriber with thousands of heic and hevc files.
Either make it work or add a conversion tool (to JPG, PNG, whatever that Plex already works with). Would be much appreciated. Thanks
+1 me too - I’m so naïve I thought I had a weird permission issue. This is just mystifying - and massively disappointing:-(
Adding my vote here as well! or is there somewhere else we can vote? Either way, we need this ASAP, please!
Please allow HIEC support, this is a big problem. How can you not support this??? We are in the year 2022. This format is not going away anytime soon. Please stop torturing the user community for so many years about this!!! I am a life time member, I was aware of this issue before I signed up, but I hoped it would be at leased fixed by now, but I am still waiting. I have to convert thousands of photos to the inefficient JPG format. This wastes time an close me a lot of time to maintain two versions of my photos plus the cost of storage. In some cases I have no choice but to delete the HIEC format, this is like going backwards in technology and really is terrible mistake on your part for not supporting this feature soon. So please help us out!!!
Thank you.
Not sure where to vote or do I just need to comment on here.
I’m new to PLEX, I’ve bought a mycloud home, transferred over 400 photos from my phone to now find out I can’t view them on our TV,
Very disappointed.
My cloud used to work directly on our tv.
As it stands I wouldn’t recommend either mycloud or PLEX

I’m sorry to hear about your trouble. I’ve had to save many pictures of Ms. Peaches and other special friends. I know how important that job can be.
Maybe keep the heic files for the future and make copies as jpg.
On a Mac a one liner to convert them would be
brew install libheif
cd ~/Folder.of.heic.images
for f in *.heic; do heif-convert -q 100 "$f" "$f.jpg"; done
@elan You could sell some t-shirts and get an intern. A good one withstands many washings, and the other is a t-shirt. On the front a football with a Plex logo and “Ready, Set, Heic!” On the back “Good GrHeif Charlie Brown” ![]()
Seriously I would buy some Perks, but I never see any hard drives or tuners anymore. Oh just noticed you added moviepallete okay thank you sir.
Just an obligatory check-in…no HEIC…oh well.
I like the intern idea. My software company have teams that use intern projects for offhand feature requests like this. It’s actually not a bad internship project.
Checking back in for an update… same old from Plex…
So who wants to write a plugin for plex to handle photos?
Maybe if there is competition it will become a priority?
In the year 2023 support for HEIC should not be considered a “feature” to be voted on and bubble up for prioritization. It should be considered basic functionality that anyone new to the platform would expect.
As you know, HEIC was finalized in 2015 and widespread use started in 2017 with iPhone iOS. The fact that we are literally begging for support 6 years later is slightly embarrassing, very frustrating, and honestly is the single biggest roadblock to recommending the otherwise impressive Plex to my tech savvy friends. Even my family members ask where all the photos are when browsing and I really don’t want to convert my very large HEIC photo library to JPEG – even if just temporarily.
As a firmware developer I am curious to understand the 6-year delay in adding support for such an important feature. Are you dependent on a third party plugin which you do not have source code access too ? Are you resource constrained and might possibly be able to leverage the open-source community for this task ?
Thanks
Upvoted. This feature matters to users.
Upvote from me too…should be standard in Plex by now
This must be a joke. I feel like we’ve been asking for this for years. Are there any mods reading this?
Please please don’t let photo support in Plex die… without HEIC format support, photo libraries get one step closer to being unusable. I’m literally on a vacation now with multiple family members taking photos with different devices and I’ll have no way of loading them into Plex without a messy and unnecessary conversion step… half of the photos are HEIC…
I’ve been using Plex photo libraries since day 1 of setting up a server and I still love having complete control of my own photos. A relative just lost half of her photos because she couldn’t figure out what was in iCloud and what was in an iPhoto library sitting on an old outdated iMac as local media. For power users, having complete control over a photo library is amazing and it would be very sad to lose this…
Samsung has implemented HEIC also… seriously, this shouldn’t be hard and it doesn’t just impact Apple now.
The photos feature remains mostly useless for pretty much anyone who takes photos with an iPhone since iOS11 came out in 2017. This shows a clear lack of prioritization for the photo library feature of Plex.
