Help!! Device not showing up to cast to in Plex for Android app

I have asked this question before but didn’t get an answer. I have a few Plex devices. One of those is a Samsung Blu-ray. I use my Plex for Android app as a remote for all devices. They all work perfectly apart from the Samsung Blu-ray which recently stopped appearing as a device in the app. Plex still works on it but I can’t cast to it. However it does show up on Plex web. I cannot work out why. I have deleted the Samsung app and re-downloaded it but it didn’t fix it. My Plex server is on a Synology Nas. I believe it stopped working when the server had an update recently. I really need to fix this as my Blu-ray is in another room to the projector it plays on so I can only control it by my phone. Please, any suggestions would be good. I cannot work out why it shows on Plex web and not on Plex for Android!!

If the server is on the Syno, you can confirm it’s working and signed into your Plex account?

If it shows in only one place and not all, the very first question to ask is “Is everything signed into the same account?”

Thanks for getting back to me.
Let’s just say I have no idea how to do that lol, what would I do?
I logged into the server and the blu-ray is showing up in the devices section. I can cast to it from the plex web app so they seem to be talking to each other just fine. It’s the plex for android app on my phone which doesn’t seem to be picking up the Blu-ray but is still picking up every other device.
They’re all logged into the same account as far as I’m aware, I’ve only got the one.

Anyone able to help??

Can’t help, but I have an issue where my castable devices don’t show up in Plex, but they show up in chromes casting list.

Also, other Plex players don’t show up at all except for Android Shield TV.

Anyone out there that has any ideas for a fix to this?

It’s really annoying when I want to commandeer a stream on another machine and the Cast/Fling device list is inconsistent across platforms. It’s always a roll of the dice what will be available to Cast to or Fling to (in Plex terms), depending on which device I’m using and what particular mood the Cast-Gods are in that moment.

I’ve noticed the best consistency using the Web app on a Chrome Dev branch, but recently the iPad doesn’t want to show up in the list anymore while it’s the main player.

Just be sure to specify in the future which API you are trying to use. That little device list you’re looking at aggregates multiple APIs into a single view.

• Apple airplay
• Google Cast
• Plex Fling
• etc

The Fling API is obviously another half-baked can of beans from Plex.

Case in point. I have Plex open on my desktop via the web app, but my android app can’t see it right now even though I’m looking at the computer and it’s on and set to “advertise as player”. Most of the time it will show “Plex Web (Chrome)” in the device listing, but now the Cast-Gods are angry…

All that discovery is done using broadcast packets (x.x.x.255) . Either the packets get through or they don’t.

(I’m discussing this with others concurrently)

what web browser do you have plex web open in with advertise enabled? are you opening it from same url as when it does work?

Plex Companion is a super cool feature for sure and I use it all the time. I’ve found that if I just start a client such as a mobile client I may have to wait for it to discover my network before all Companion devices show up in the list.

Here’s a current list of supported applications: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/203082707-Supported-Plex-Companion-Apps
Here’s a list of ports that must be open locally that could affect Plex Companion: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201543147-What-network-ports-do-I-need-to-allow-through-my-firewall-

A couple things to make sure of when using a mobile device. It needs to be connected to your WIFI (not cellular) and on the same network as the other Plex Companion devices. That means if you have a Guest WIFI or VLANs in place you have to be careful to make sure both devices are on the same network (same IP range).

As mentioned there is a discovery process that finds other Plex Companion devices and this could be seconds to much longer depending on your network and the state of the devices when polled. But for those having this issue are you experiencing this if you wait 3 to 5 minutes before checking to see what Plex Companions are available?

That should be a sufficient time period to help diagnose if this is a problem or not.

The Samsung app needs a few items before it will work as a player.
It is different because the bluray (or TV for that matter) doesn’t allow to use the Plex companion protocol directly.
So for it to work you need a server that will relay the command to the Plex cloud.

You need at least one of the servers to confirm to:

  • Is local (remote and PlexCloud will not work)
  • Is owned by you (you are the admin)
  • Is reachable.

Since you said it used to work, the problem is probably that you need to sign your server in again, after the upgrade.

Just a little off topic, but since you’re looking into things.

When commandeering an existing stream (hosted on web player) using an iPad, there is no “Now Playing” hud. So you can’t Play/Pause, adjust volume, skip tracks, etc unless you start playing something entirely new from the newly connected device.

I only noticed recently because I dug out our iPad to tune the Sonos and decided to keep it out for a while.

You’ll have to ask in the iOS forum about that. I’ve fallen so far behind because of my focus with Linux, I don’t even have time to enjoy the setup I have

Sonos is not a supported Plex Companion app. it is actually a bug that it shows up in our IOS or Android app. you need to use the Sonos app on your iPad to control it properly. if that is what you meant then it should be working in the Sonos app. just had someone try it here.

No, I don’t use the Sonos labs plex service much because it’s extremely unreliable.

Instead, I have my touchscreen connected to the Play:5 pair, which is why I rely on the in-app Cast API so much.
Once I start a stream via the web app on the touchscreen, the only way to get Sonos-like control is by connecting to that device from other apps.

*And I’m stuck using the Web app because neither openPHT and Plex Media Player support touch controls.

When it works, it’s really awesome.

Thanks for the input everyone. Ok so I’m on the only network I have, pretty basic with no VPN or anything. I don’t have guest account enabled. I’m definitely on the wifi because the other Plex clients are showing up. The Blu-ray is on the same network as it’s getting a local ip in the same range. I have deleted the app on the Blu-ray and reinstalled then signed in again. I have also logged into my Synology Nas and opened the Plex app (which just opens Plex web) and signed in. The Blu-ray is showing up as a cast able device when I open that but it still isn’t on my Plex for Android app. I think that is everyone suggested above. I’m not overly tech savvy so please let me know if I have missed anything.

Ok actually I dont think my server is reachable. I’ve been playing with it and when I hit copy pms on the server settings in the Samsung Plex app it shows these details in the photo below. I then deleted the server and tried to add it (192.168.1.19:32400) and it then said “test failed, make sure your server is on, and the IP address is reachable”.
So I’m assuming that it’s connecting to Plex using the internet rather than the local network? Even though it is plugged in to the same router and has an IP in the same range.
Any ideas from here?

Ok I went into the Samsung Blu-ray browser. I went to 192.168.1.19:32400 and it worked. I deleted the Plex app and reinstalled, this time not using the pin to log in and I got the message in the below photo. I went to sign in with the pin then back to the server which I deleted. I added my server 192.168.1.19:32400 and it was successful. And it’s still not showing up in the Plex for Android app!!! What am I missing??
