When i use the HDHomerun App to watch Live TV all the channels load fine, including the SD and HD channels.
When i try and use Plex though, the channels barely show up, some work fine, some don’t show up in Watch Now, Starting Soon etc. Its as if Plex cant see any data for those channels (mostly the HD variants, but not all) so doesn’t display it, yet if i look at the same channel in HDHomerun it works fine i.e. channel number and EPG info all matches whats OTA. From what i understood HDHR is pulling the Freeview EPG as well.
I have tried matching various similarly or identically named channels from the EPG to the detected channels in the HDHR Connect and got some working but these others i cannot figure out. Interestingly from within the Program Guide if i click on the Discover heading up top and change it to Watch Now i see 4 blank thumbnails with no details and under them it just says “Loading”, they also cannot be clicked on.
HDHR Connect can see 48 channels, Plex is setup with 28 of them, yet only shows 17 in Watch Now and 4 of them are “Loading”. What about the 15 missing channels.
Thinking the issue might be that Plex only shows the one instance of a show, i have confirmed that only one channel is being detected for that show even though it is streamed on both at the same time (within Plex, using the Get Info menu item). Also, to further test, if i was only seeing Channel 9 SD, i would disable it and leave the Channel 9 HD channel enabled. After refreshing the EPG, i no longer see Channel 9 at all in Plex. Re-enable it and it comes back, but only SD again.
I am trying out a few different EPG’s and i must admit it seems to have fixed the problem. I will keep playing and see what i can find. IceTV seems like a good option, although it is the only one to do something a little weird. I wanted to record an episode for the kids tomorrow morning. There are a few standard 30 min episodes all aired in a larger timeslot where a show host is involved for a few mins between each episode. IceTV insists i should record the entire 4 hour timeslot to get the one episode i want whereas every other provider, including gracenote and freeview have identified each individual episode.
I now have 6 of those thumbnails that just say Loading and cannot be clicked on when going to the Watch Now section. Does everyone get this? They appear to be the 5 HD channels and 1 channel that has the same show running as another network does. It appears a second channel with identical shows seems to break it until they move to another show and then it shows both of them again.
Well the IceTV Plex solution (not the raw XMLTV service) seems to have fixed the problem. Its rather disappointing to see that i need to subscribe to a 3rd party service to make this work though as the Gracenote guides were virtually unusable due to the lack of information for certain channels. I would have hoped there would have been a way to still play the channels in Plex without the guide information like you can in the HDHomerun app itself as well, maybe something for the future.
I am still trying to figure out what the “Loading” channels are about, but it doesnt appear to be breaking anything for the time being.
I’ve never been able to record a full week of home and away. Always wants to record the repeat on 7flix here in perth. Had to manually delete the channel in plex dvr setup. Refresh program guide and then was able to do a scheduled recording. As far as i know there are issues with episode numbers etc. Icetv are aware of it and working with plex to resolve. Icetv are awesome. Support is awesome. I know it sounds crazy that you’d pay another company for an epg but they do an excellent job and are helping plex make their product better. Please get back to me if you have any questions. Love plex and use their products over many many platforms
This is driving me up the wall. Does anyone from Plex monitor these forums? Do they offer any assistance? Seems bizarre to pay for a product and have no point of contact available.
Even an acknowledgement of the issue would be nice.
There doesn’t seem to be any logical reason why IceTV is the only guide that seems to work.
I’ve had the same issue as the OP for a number of months. No amount of deleted and resetting up the DVR has helped. It is clearly something to do with the eh Gracenote EPG here in Australia as it seems all affected users are in Australia.
I’ve had to turn off the HD channels and leave only their SD versions as the HD ones don’t end up having any data after a couple of days
I really don’t want to have to pay for ANOTHER company’s EPG when the silicon dust tuners have built in EPGs that work WAYYY better than the Plex ones.
Long time Plex user, just setup Plex DVR TV and think I’ve finally found an alternative to Windows Media Centre broadcast to a household of xbox extenders!
Set it up on two 12 year old Hauppauge Nova-T-500s (4 tuners total) used on my MCE server and seem to work great!
Question: what’s the consensus on best Australian EPG of late, freeview vs gracenote etc?
Have it set up on freeview (default option) but not convinced timing of shows are correct. Heard gracenote has gotten better but haven’t tried it. Is gracenote a separate EPG option or is it being used if you select freeview with Enhanced Program Guide option selected?
Is there any easy way to change EPG sources after channels have been scanned and EPG selected? Know icetv exists (have used it in the past for MCE) however not sure if it’s warranted.
The Freeview guide is via Gracenote, so it’s one and the same. To change the EPG source and region, you need to delete the DVR and set it up again (all your recordings are remembered, don’t worry). I personally use IceTV in Melbourne, so it’s up to you to have a look and see what works best for you.
Thanks Dave. Just switched to IceTV myself now having issues with Chrome not rendering grid guide correctly (works fine). IceTV have replicated the issue and have confirmed this is a Plex issue. I’ve raised the issue here:
Dave - I’m also trying troubleshoot a “no write access to destination error” on some recordings. I get it intermittently, user account running plex has full access to NAS directory where recordings are going, unless there’s somewhere else I should be checking privileges? I have two dual tuners configured with plex, maybe reason for intermittent issue relates to one tuner device vs another but I’ve tested 4 recordings simultaneously with no issues.
Hi Dave - is it possible to play a program (from the start) whilst it’s recording?
Seemed able to do this for a program today, but then when I came back to it, it would only allow me to watch live and not from the commencement of the program despite still being recorded.
