Can't get EPG to load

I plugged in my new HDHomeRun EXTEND tuner today. It works great!

So I purchased a new lifetime Plex Pass today, to make it work with the new tuner! Great!

Except…Plex is broken and won’t work.

It finds the tuner straight away. It finds the channels. I type in my ZIP code, it says “We’re finding the best guide…”

It then comes up with a list of guides, and its choice is “AT&T U-Verse TV Digital.” No, that’s not right, I’m connected to a over-the-air antenna.

So I change it to “Local Over the Air Broadcast”.

Pretty much instantly, it comes back with this error: “Error communicating with provider”

And it’s done. I can back up and try again, but it fails EVERY time.

So I open my browser dev console to see what’s happening. When I attempt to change my provider, it hits this URL:

https://192-168-0-2.(redacted).plex.direct:32400/livetv/epg/channels?lineup=lineup%3A%2F%2Ftv.plex.providers.epg.onconnect%2FUSA-OTA44149%23Local%2520Over%2520the%2520Air%2520Broadcast&X-Plex-Product=Plex%20Web&X-Plex-Version=3.87.2&X-Plex-Client-Identifier=(redacted)&X-Plex-Platform=Chrome&X-Plex-Platform-Version=72.0&X-Plex-Sync-Version=2&X-Plex-Device=Windows&X-Plex-Device-Name=Chrome&X-Plex-Device-Screen-Resolution=1776x878%2C1920x1080&X-Plex-Token=(redacted)&X-Plex-Language=en

This comes back instantly with “400 Bad Request.”

So it looks like the Plex server is broken, or the client is broken and sending bad requests, or both.

In any case, I can’t use my new tuner, I can’t get it hooked up to Plex, and I’m dead in the water.

There appears to be no support options other than posting this message here, and from reading other people’s experiences posting the same problem, it is then just universally ignored.

So I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to have spent all this money to get…NOTHING! What a fantastic user experience!

Funny story, I just installed a new HD Quadro tonight, and am getting the exact same thing.
Can’t select Over-The-Air broadcast. Completely locked out.

In the past, there has been a lot of problems with the EPG updates. They are broken for weeks, and then start magically working.

I’m where you are now, looking at logs, trying to find a workaround, (pissed as anything)
Hopefully, based on the theory that few people have seen this problem before, this is some kind of rare problem that will fix itself soon.

Will post here if/when it starts working. Good luck.

Hey Flyer, Try it now.
I just got mine to go through.

Took all night trying. but it finally worked.

Go all the way back to the beginning, like you’re adding a new tuner.
Good luck!

Ah, this again  I was along for the ride the first time the issue was prevalent: EPG fails to update.

Yesterday I lost a drive, and rebuilt today. Now I can’t get the EPG to load after my rebuild :frowning:

Arrrgh, where is any official response? It seems like a bunch of us are unable to consistently update our guides. And stuff happens, which we all understand. But it sure would be nice if a Plex employee said “we are aware of the problem, and are looking into it”

Once again:

Yep, I’m going through the same thing. A week or so ago, my scheduled recordings were not recording anymore. When I checked my guide, it was displaying incorrect times for some shows. So I tried refreshing the guide; this did nothing. It showed 0% on progress, and immediately canceled out. So Then I tried removing my tuner/DVR from Plex and re-adding it and now I’m getting the same error message when I try to select “Local Over the Air Broadcast”

My solution to this was using my own xmltv guide from zap2it using zap2xml. Gracenote is the default EPG provided by Plex, but it’s been so inconsistent lately, and I’ve missed out on some of my favorite shows because of this.

@Plex Team: I’ve noticed that EPG issues have been happening for more than a year now and I’ve seen many threads of unhappy customers. I’ve also experienced EPG issues, but this is the worst that I’ve experienced, because with no guide, I pretty much am unable to watch or record anything. Emby seems like a strong competitor. I’ve used them in the past and recently, they added Nvidia Shield support. Their EPG works great, recording worked back when I used it and works great now on the Shield. Media libraries are organized, they allow remote access… I use Plex on the Nvidia Shield and it’s always crashing on me and bugs out on me often. I am now at a point of deciding whether I should stay with Plex or switch to Emby completely.

Also having problems with EPG. I’m trying to setup a HDHR. I can get past the zip code prompt using a nearby town. I then choose to use the Local over-the-air broadcast as my listing source and get “Error communicating with provider”.

My server log is filled with messages like this:

Feb 27, 2019 18:42:38.359 [8019] INFO - EPG: Skipping channel 'MY TV' because it's not a unique call sign.
Feb 27, 2019 18:42:39.576 [8019] INFO - EPG: Skipping channel 'Antenna' because it's not a unique call sign.

Feb 27, 2019 18:42:39.577 [8019] INFO - EPG: Skipping channel 'MPTKIDS' because it's not a unique call sign.

Other sources appear to load fine but never get guide data. There are lots of 404 errors in the logs when this happens:

https://tmsapi.plex.tv/v1.1/lineups/USA-DISH512-DEFAULT/grid?api_key=xxx&endDateTime=2019-02-28T00%3A00Z&imageSize=Ms&imageText=false&startDateTime=2019-02-27T18%3A00Z

Add me to the list of users experiencing the same problem. I was able to set up the DVR earlier today, but it wasn’t loading the two weeks worth of listings. In my attempts to recreate the DVR, I experience the “error communicating with provider” message. I’ve been using MythTV for the longest, but decided to try Plex because of issues with zero-byte recordings on MythTV. After reading all the other issues people have experienced with Plex and EPG, it doesn’t give me a good feeling about sticking with Plex. The media server functionality isn’t that important to me. I just want a DVR that can run from my Linux server and work consistently.

Same…
EPG: received HTTP response of 404 from request to https://tmsapi.plex.tv/v1.1/lineups/USA-DISH820-DEFAULT/grid?api_key=xxx&endDateTime=2019-02-28T06%3A00Z&imageSize=Ms&imageText=false&startDateTime=2019-02-28T00%3A00Z

Another one here. No joy at all in getting past the error when attempting to select “Local Over The Air Broadcast.” Just “Error communicating with provider.”

I’m suffering through the same problem as some of the people who posted before me in this thread. I setup the Live TV DVR in Plex tonight. On the first attempt, Plex defaulted the guide to the AT&T Uverse guide and would not let me choose a different guide. When I completed the setup, the guide would not load.

Next, I deleted the DVR in the setup and start anew. This time Plex let me select local over the air for the guide. I completed the setup, but the guide still shows empty. Manual refresh of the guide does not solve the problem.

I also am having the same issues here in Arizona. Very annoying.

I am also not able to setup the guide. This is a new Plex setup on a new Windows 10 install. Earlier Plex decided to skip entire days and only start recording on 3/1. A manual recording would work but if I tried to set a new series to record it would immediately clear the red dots showing that the recording was scheduled. There were no lines in the log. All recordings before 3/1 were not listed and starting 3/3 they were skipped again. Most that have been recording for months such as ABC Nightly news were listed as no episodes available.

I removed the DVR and put it back. The first time it defaulted to Spectrum instead of OTA even though it showed “Antenna” as the correct source. When I backed up from that and tried again there was no result when I put in my zip code. No error but I couldn’t continue. Then it let me continue and I selected OTA and it looked fine but downloaded no guide data. Hitting refresh of the log immediately went back to the way the screen was with no errors and no sign of lines in the logs.

Now I can’t get past zip code. It just doesn’t do anything. Can’t continue. Again, no sign of any activity in the logs or errors on the screen. Just nothing.

PS: Now I’m getting “Unable to fetch Guide settings” for the first time.

I wonder if the issue could be with how Plex interacts with the video capture device? I use multiple HDHRs and, in my MythTV setup, it will show the two tuners in the one device. For unknown reasons my recordings weren’t happening (showing zero-byte sizes). Initially, I had all the tuners configured (HDHR1-0, HDHR1-1, HDHR2-0, HDHR2-1) and this was intermittently causing me problems. I changed it to be a single tuner per device (HDHR1-0, HDHR2-0) and my recordings are working again without any problems. Of course, this cuts down the amount of simultaneous recordings I can do and defeats the purpose of having two tuners in one device.

Since Plex only shows the device, and not the amount of tuners, Plex has to be able to handle devices with multiple tuners. Not sure if anything has changed with the Plex software or HDHR, but it could be something the Plex team could investigate. Maybe it would be better to configure each tuner and not the device.

Regardless, I’m successfully recording again with MythTV. As it stands, my Plex experience has not been favorable and I’m only out $5. I will continue to experiment with it and cancel before my next billing cycle. If anything changes before then, I might stick with Plex. I’ve read so many glowing reviews about Plex, but after this experience and other EPG problems, I wouldn’t give Plex DVR a high rating.

This current issue seems to be just the EPG. Mine started downloading again though isn’t showing much in the future yet. I can set up a series recording which I could not do last night. I have two HDHRs also and keep the 2 tuner version for the Windows Media Center mainly because WMC can’t handle more than 4 tuners. It’s too risky that if I let it have access to the 4 tuner that it will clash Plex which gets four tuners. I haven’t changed anything with it, accepting the defaults.

I am experiencing issues getting the EPG to work. I installed A WinTV-quadHD card today and struggled through what should have been a very easy process.

I was finally able to get past the zip code issues others have reported, but now it won’t let me select any guide other than the AT&T U-Verse guide without throwing the “error communicating with provider message”.

I need over the air for my market, but no matter what zip code I select, the guide issue rears its ugly head.

Anyone have any other ideas?

According to the Plex status page https://status.plex.tv/ this problem was resolved at 6:50am PST.
I tried to set up my DVR again and it is DEFINITELY NOT fixed. Still can’t choose the live over the air program guide. Still getting the “error communicating with provider” error.

Reinstall a new HDHomeRun and unable to have the EPG guide.
Issue still not resolve.
Anyone have a other solution to get EPG guide ?
