Shame on me in advance for a little cross-posting, but I got no love in my thread in the other area.
I’ve boiled down some strange buffering behavior that I need some help on. You can see all the dark places I’ve visited whilst talking to myself in the other thread, but the important details are as follows:
Remote server running Plex Media Server 1.4.1.3362 on Debian 8 via ESXi with a 100Mbps up/down connection
PMS VM is behind a Pfsense installation (hunch that this may be important)
Media has been converted (mainly to H264/AAC) to avoid transcoding (confirmed during testing)
Problem: Streaming cache maxes out at 2Mbps (as seen in PMP on my Mac)
Ports are properly forwarded so that PMP claims to have a direct connection to the server (server confirms remote access and available to outside world).
Question: Now the crazy bit… if I disable remote access and then use an ssh tunnel to forward 32400, stream caching jumps to 10+Mbps and no buffering happens. Turn the remote access back on and disable the ssh tunnel, streaming goes back to <2Mbps.
Thank you! Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

This got me thinking about the PMS version… so, I started experimenting with some docker containers. As it turns out, PMS 1.3.4 inside a docker container (even with docker running from inside a VM on ESXi) streams fine at 10+Mbps. Load up the plexpass container with the latest 1.4.2 and it streams at the slow <2Mbps rate I’ve been seeing.
Can someone with knowledge of the codebase provide any insight? I guess at this point, I wait it out for a fix in subsequent release(s).
