HELP! Plex on Shield looks terrible

Server Version#:
Player Version#:
I am new here, and I just got the Shield Pro that has the Plex server on it. I don’t know where to find the server version/player version that this post is referencing. Everything is up to date is all i can say.

History:
I used a WD HD Live player after converting my DVDs to digital for about a decade before it died. I ripped my DVDs into Video_TS folders, not converted to mkv/mp4 formats. Everything was great, high quality. I had a HD for TV shows and one for Movies, each file was 4-8 GB depending on the movie. Space was not an issue. Quality and playback was not an issue. After researching as best i could, I bought the Shield Pro to replace my WD Live player.

Issue:
I used Handbrake on Standard settings for preset General> SuperHQ 1080p Surround. Codec is H264. Converted all my VideoTS folders (thankfully did not delete them just in case). All the converted videos are terrible. They are about 480p, so you can see pixels, the top and bottom of the screen have large black bars so that the video only takes up about 1/2 the screen vertically. As such, everything is slightly distorted. I have tried a few different Handbrake presets, all come out the same. I also tried MakeMKV, same thing. The videos seem fine when watching on plex on my computer though. What am I doing wrong?? Please help a person who just doesn’t know what to do with simple instructions if possible! Thank you!

If you go into Settings in Plex on the Shield, the version number is displayed at the bottom of the screen.

I suspect the display issue has to do with a setting that I myself only learned about recently. Try this:

  1. Start a movie playing.
  2. While the movie is playing, press ‘down’ on the remote to bring up the player control menu. Select the action menu:
  3. From this menu, select ‘Playback Settings’:
  4. Move down to the ‘Display Mode’ slider and try the different settings:

Plex will remember the setting you choose, so you won’t have to do this again when you play other movies, unless you need to.

OMG, that fixed it! Thank you!
