My Plex Media Server won’t start up after an Windows 10 update last night (Oct 12, 2023 - KB5031356 & KB5021224). It was working perfectly up to then (v1.32.6.7468). When I manually load it, it briefly appears in my system tray on my taskbar, then disappears. The only thing in my Task Manager is Plex Update Service but 0% CPU. (is it stuck on automatically updating in the background?)
I tried to update to the latest version by downloading 1.32.6.7557 but the installation hangs (yes its run as admin) when it detects the older version and it says uninstalling that first. I even tried to manually modify and uninstall the older version by itself and it hangs as well.
I’ve tried to upgrade it to the latest version via Safe-Mode and it gives me an Error code: 1601 Windows Installer Services could not be accessed. In tried to uninstall it in safe mode and it gives me a 0x80070641 Windows Installer Service could not be accessed.
Then I tried the Microsoft Fix It Tool / Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter (as suggested in the pinned thread here) and selected the Plex Media Server to uninstall and that hangs too stuck at Resolving problems.
So now I can’t run PMS, I can’t update it to the latest version without uninstalling the version the was running, and I can’t uninstall the previous version at all! I’m so scared to completely nuke PMS and start from scratch again with all my playlists and customizations.
Could it have something to do with KB5031356 - Cumulative Update or KB5021224 Update for .NET Framework 3.5, 4.8 and 4.8.1?
I’m so stumped. I need my Plex! I’ve been using for at least 10yrs and I’m addicted - ah!!!
