I am unable to update Plex Media Server. If I have PMS check for updates, it will do a download, but then sit there and do nothing for a couple of minutes and then PMS will come back. If I download the current installer and run it, it will sit for a minute or so and then throw a warning that it cannot find a package called stop-pms.msi So I tried uninstalling from the control panel, but Windows says the old version has already been uninstalled. So now I’m in a really weird place where I can’t pull the old version and I can’t install the new version.
Plex Updater Service is running.
After a restart, I see the same issue.
As for the other article, you linked, I have not moved any of my libraries, I do not use any 3rd party uninstallers, nor do I use CCleaner. After a reboot, I still have the same issue.
Solution was to run the FixIt against both Plex Server and “Stopping Plex”, then reboot, then reinstall. Unfortunately, this had the effect of presenting itself to Plex as a new server even though it has the same name and everything. So getting authenticated required jumping through a few hoops.
I feel like the process of installing a service so that you can stop another service is … silly. Apparently, this process leaves you vulnerable to failures to install, uninstall, and failure to start a service. I think this would all be a LOT more simple if Plex Server was installable as a service just like pretty much every other “server” product.
