Help with music scanner

Guys i have a huge music archive that’s basically in one directory… all the files are in the following format " - .mp3" with complete ID3 tag information, including embedded cover art, etc.

out of the box Plex doesn’t add a single track of mine

i fiddled about with scanner script but couldn’t get a reliable solution yet.

at one point i created a subdirectory with an artist’s name, and moved all the songs for that artist (from multiple albums) into that one directory

and i changed the code :

trackRx1 = ‘([a-z0-9]+) - (.*).mp3’

Plex picked up all the songs… but i had duplicate album listings… so that didn’t quite work…

is there a way to get Plex to just pick up all files with an mp3 extension and just sort them based on their ID3 tags?

i’ve spent months editing the tags on my music collection to ensure it’s accurate, and i’m quite bummed about not being able to access it on Plex (i know i can do that through iTunes, but i prefer if i don’t, especially since the library is on another server mounted as a read-only share)

Hi,

I’m basically in the same boat but have found a workaround. My music is also in a big folder using the same naming structure and is meticulously tagged.

If you use the scanner found here, you can get your music to scan into PMS. Here’s how it works:

-Add all your music into iTunes. If you don’t want iTunes to change the way your music is setup in your computer, use the “manually manage my music” option in the preferences.

-Despite what spaceman says in his post, that scanner will simply use the information stored on the iTunes Library.xml file of your computer to tell Plex where your music is. With this scanner, you can have any kind of music directory setup you want. If the music shows in iTunes, it’ll go into PMS.

-I suggest not using a metadata agent at first to see if you can scan all your music into PMS correctly, then play around with trying to match your stuff and getting metadata for them. That last.fm agent really isn’t all that great outside of the big mainstream artists, but that’s all detailed somewhere in another post. It took me a few hours to get metadata for everything, much of it added manually, but I got everything to work the way I wanted to.

When you get new music, simply scan it into the iTunes Library and rescan your music section in PMS. The changes will appear at that point. PMS will rescan the entire section for changes and will attempt to refresh all the metadata of all your music. I suggest you lock your metadata if you don’t want unwanted to happen.
