Here's how to handle a Windows re-install

Just re-installed but didn’t backup the registry. Oops. Don’t panic.

First, as long as you have your Plex Data stored elsewhere…

  1. Setup your new server to use the old plex data location on your hard drive.
  2. Restart Plex. You should see your libraries. You’ll also see your NEW library in the settings, and you will see your OLD server, but it will be offline.
  3. Click on your OLD (offline) server.
  4. The URL will look something like:
    http://127.0.0.1:32400/web/index.html#!/settings/server/bed6fbfe0486fcbfb1a845c8f5aeec4ab545903b/settings/general
  5. Grab that ID string. Shutdown Plex media server.
  6. Open REGEDIT, and hit up Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server and change the values for “ProcessedMachineIdentifier” to the string above.
  7. Start Plex Media server. Enjoy.
