Why can’t I connect to the old server after reinstalling Windows? I have to rebuild it, add new movie categories, and set up everything again.

Can backup ?

Your server settings are saved in the Windows registry. If the re-install wiped that, then your old server info is gone. If you had the info saved, you can restore the registry. Otherwise, you will have to create a new server and rebuild your libraries.

restore registry ?

If you saved the Plex registry before the Windows reinstall, you can easily restore it. If you didn’t make a backup, then you are out of luck.

how to restrore plex registry ?

If you exported the old registry, you should have a .reg file that you saved. All you have to do is double click on this file and it will write itself back into the registry.

Where file registy ?

It is not a file that just exists, you had to have manually saved it. You specify where it gets saved to, so it will be there. Like I said, if you didn’t go through this process of saving the Plex registry info, there won’t be anything to restore.

? regitry

Delete that image immediately. Someone can use that info to access your server.

That is the Plex registry, Is that what you have now or is that from an image of the old server? If it’s the old server, right-click where you have “Plex Media Server” highlighted. You will see an option to export. Save that as a file somewhere you can access from the new Windows. Just double click on the file on the new Windows.

If that registry is what you have now, it doesn’t help. Some of that info is what identifies your server. When you reinstalled Windows, this info got deleted. Installing PMS would have created new entries, with new info to identify the server. This makes your PMS look like a new server. You need the old info from the registry.
